A little more information would be helpful. Like what version of Outlook are you running and on which operating system? What are you doing when Outlook gives this error? How have you been shutting down Outlook?

This may be a Microsoft bug, but it is more likely to be how you interact with Outlook that is causing this issue, primarily how you close it down. Things to check in the meantime as to why Outlook is not closing cleanly:

    1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
    2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support for an alleged fix.
    3. Franklin-Covey Plan Plus installed!
    4. COM Add-ins. (Tools>Trust Center>Comm Add-ins>Go) Disable and re-intriduce one by one to eliminate possible cause.
    5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background to check for new mail and fire reminders.
    6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing mail.
    7. Leaving Outlook open overnight
    8. Hibernating the operating system instead of complete shutdown
    9. Temporary internet connection loss
    10. Is Outlook fully closing in Task manager before you shutdown? If not, manually enforce it.
    11. Delete previously downloaded mail which has been left on the ISP server
    12. Remove Google Desktop Outlook toolbar

    Hi and welcome

What Windows and Office versions are you using, these are of great help to know?

Does this happen all the time?

Is Outlook on an Exchange Server? if so need to contact your network manager or IT support team in place of work.

Do you have the Google Toolbar installed? if so uninstall or update to see if this resolves this.

Possible is an add-in thats causing this so in Outlook goto Tools > Trust Center > Add-ins > at bottom where it says Manage click next to COM add-ins GO and untick all non Microsoft add-ins and test if it works ok, then enable one at a time to find culprit.

If cannot start Outlook as I dont know from your limited post that you cannot, then click Start > Run and type Outlook /safe and see if Outlook starts in its safe mode, for Vista that would be click Start and type into Start Search box outlook /safe and hit enter

hi sorry was so criptic in my question but I thought it may be a common problem. I don't deel with outlook myself but the wife has it on her link. it is an xp microsoft outlook 2007 that keeps her emails ,calender and stuff. the error message comes on right away and the note on whether to notify microsoft appears killing any chance to access the tools tab as it freezes the screen. I uninstalled the google task bar but could not get outlook/safe to open. thanks

Please continue to work through the other suggestions put forward by Halo and myself. Let us know which you have tried and what the outcome was of each. If you need further direction on any of them, just ask :)
