Tried to check email and got this error -

"The application or DLL D:\Windows\System32\inetres.dll is not a valid image.
Please check this against your installation diskette."

Couldn't find this file in System32 or System32\dllcache.
Running Office 2002 and XP Pro all updated.
Before this had happened, another desktop account had been corrupted. Rebooted and diskcheck ran and recovered account. Don't know if this is applicable or not.
Any help would be appreciated. TIA

I'm up to date with SP2.
Downloaded file and I've got a copy in each location.
Now when I hit send/receive, Outlook closes with this error description -
    AppName: outlook.exe
    AppVer: 10.0.6626.0
    ModName: Kernel32.dll
    ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180
    Offset: 0001861d

Looked in System32\dllcache and I've got 3 copies of Kerner32.dll.
    kernel32.dll, kernel32(2).dll, kernel32.dll.tmp
    Not sure what's going on.

Have you tried running a repair on office, via add/remove?

No, I haven't tried a repair. Do you think that will do the trick?

A repair on the software, might do the trick. Only one way to find out! :)

Note, this is not a repair of the OS. ;)

Took me this long to find the correct copy of Office.
Tried a repair and get the following error message from the installer -
"This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."
It's a valid copy of Office and I can see PRORET.MSI on the CD but can't get it to run.
Any suggestions? (I hate calling MS.)

If you have the disk, you can nuke office with the windows installer cleanup utility (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html), then just reinstall it.

Please bear in mind that Office will be gone, so be very sure you are using the right disk and have a working key before you try this. :)

Patch package errors are common in corrupted Office installs, or in situations where office is preinstalled from an image by an OEM (for example, Dell or HP).

    Best of luck!

I knew that was coming somehow.
Thanks for the reply and it's nuke time.

Just to be clear- we're only talking about Office, not windows or related programs. Should be pretty simple to reinstall, shouldn't cause any data loss!

Yes it's just Office. Everything else is fine.
I had better things to do tonight. Just hate it when the comp fouls up but it is 6 years old, so we've been lucky so far.
    Thanks again.

Just an update. Ran into an Error 1904 in Office install and ended up deleting MSRCLR40.DLL module and replacing with a download version and am finally done with a service pack and 11 updates and back in business again.
    Thanks for the help.:)
