I know this may sound like a stupid question but I've tried to resolve the situation for my parents but still can't get it to work....They are running XP and when they receive email attachments that are MS word docs they can't just dbl click and open the attachment...only way to open it is to save it then go to file and open it. I've gone through OE commands and don't see any resolve....is this a bug or what?

    Thanks for the help

Wow - I've never offered advice before - only begged for it (and happily received it) I have WIN XP (and OE 6) and I have always been able to double click on MS word docs (tho' I've had plenty of other problems with my computer)

Two things come to mind but you probably checked the first one already:
    1) In Outlook Express click on "Tools", then down to "Options". Click on the "Security" tab and see if the box is checked that says "do not allow attachments to be saved or opened..." I don't think this is the case since you said you can save them. (when this is checked there is usually and error message that shows up when you click to open an attachment).

    2) in Outlook Express go up to "Tools", click on "Message Rules", then click on "Mail". In the top section if you scroll down there's a choice for "Where the message has an attachment" - is it checked? Just see if somehow, somewhere there's been some kind of "rule" set up for it.
