I have a new computer running XP Pro. Outlook Express 6 seems to be my problem at the moment. When I double click to open it it tries to start, but then freezes up and I get the message "not responding". If I close it and then reopen it it usually opens up and I can receive and send email messages. Once in a while I have to reopen it a couple of times before it opens. This doesn't seem to quite fit the other questions in the forum, so decided to put it up for help. Its a bit frustrating because its intermittent in that sometimes it starts and sometimes not. Thanks!:confused

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll double check it, but I think its ok. It works just fine after it opens up (sometimes I have to open it 2-3 times but then it works ok). Generally the first time I try to open it it just freezes.

As I said I have seen accounts where all the information looks fine but it freezes or times out and the problem was fixed by deleting the account and recreating it.

Ok thanks again. I'll take some time and do just that.

tjet, I tried your solution. Deleted each of the accounts and recreated them. I'm still having the same problem. Won't open the first time. Any other suggestions?:confused

Sometimes running sfc will clear up problems with Outlook Express. To do this click 'Start' then 'Run' and type sfc /scannow (note the space after sfc and before the /). You may be prompted for your Windows disk so be sure and have it handy. If that doesn't resolve the problem you can try compacting the folders in Outlook Express. To do this open Outlook Express and click 'File' then 'Folders' then 'Compact All Folders'. Running sfc and compacting files both take some time but very well may resolve your problem.

Thank you for your help. I believe I have solved my problem....seems like the virus protection program I was using was blocking it. I changed it to another one and now its working! Thanks again.

I've had this problem and it seems I just have to wait for the main part of OE to open before I could put in my password and send it to check emails. They seemed to clash somehow and I think it's partly that the main part and the antivirus don't get chance to finish loading and asking the firewall for permission to access the internet, and so then OE locks up.

Maybe your antivirus itself wasn't the problem if something similar was happening for you.

Grannyg, it would have been nice if you would have let others know what antivirus program you were using. I am having the exact same problem (I think). It's a friend's computer so I don't have access to it all the time. I believe your OE would have started if you would have waited longer. My friend's computer does exactly the same thing but OE will completely open if I wait almost a minute and a half. If I bring up Task Manager it will say Outlook Express is "Not Responding." However, if I wait a minute and a half, "Not responding" will change to "Running" and OE will finish loading and work fine once loaded.

Any suggestions not already mentioned? My friend is using McAfee antivirus. I hate to uninstall it because it involves a lengthy download and installation once removed. However, if this will cure the problem, I'm sure I could convince my friend to uninstall McAfee and see what happens.

I guess I should have started my own thread so I'll do that.
