Outlook Express is no longer my default handler?

    Hi:

I use Microsoft Outlook Express as my email program. Prior to getting buying my lastest pc, I would venture to various internet sites, such as this one, and want to email the page/link to a friend. I would simply click on the "mail" icon, and a drop down menu would provide me the option of emailing the entire page, or just the link. When I clicked on "link" only, my Outlook Express would open up and send that link. Now, it doesn't appear to be my default email? I get the below when trying to send the webpage link:

I have opened my outlook express program, have clicked on "tools" and "options" and changed it to "MAKE DEFAULT", but each time I do this, its not saving it? If I open tools and options again, it will not make the "MAKE DEFAULT" stick:

I'm merely hoping to restore either my Internet Explorer Browser so that it is configued with my Outlook Express, or somehow remove the other email progam it may have so that it will default TO my Outlook Express.

Hoping this makes any sort of sense, I look forward to any sort of advice anyone might have to aid in this process.

    Thank you,
    blissmeister

Have you tried the steps below?

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the Internet Options icon, and then click the Programs tab.
    3. Under Internet Programs, click the E-mail list, and then click Outlook Express.
    4. Click Apply, and then click OK.
    5. Try to send mail from a link or another program.

Looks to me like you were using Outlook before and now you're using Outlook Express.

Outlook is an excellent program with many good features primarily aimed at the business sector. Outlook Express is a cut down home user version which I think is given out free. Personally I can't live without full outlook (but then I occasionally work at home so similar programs are necessary).

Can you confirm which one you used to use?

    Hi Steve:

I followed your instructions and see that there isn't a program associated with email, and nothing available in the drop down selecter:

I have MS Office 97, and there is an outlook email that came with the program. I've had three or four new computers since that purchase and have always put MS Office 97 on my computer. However, I've never had my computer default to the outlook program in MS Office before. After making my earlier post, I removed MS Office and tried to employ the mail icon on my browser. I noticed then there wasn't anything to select in the mail icon, so reloaded MS Office again.

Normally, I would click on the mail icon, select link, and my outlook express would open. However, this is what I am now getting:

    click mail:

    click send a Link:

    Hi Orbital57:

    I've always used Outlook Express.

    OK.

Close Outlook Express and click Start > Run and enter the command in the quote box below (complete with quotes, spaces
and the /reg switch). Then hit Enter. Might be easier just to copy and paste it to prevent typo's. ;)

Now try the "mail" icon function and see if it works.

    Hello Steve:

Sorry I didn't get back sooner. I did plug that into my "run", and still was not getting my outlook express to open when trying to send a webpage. However, I did a little searching and HAVE figured out a fix. If anyone ever comes here and has the same problem in trying to get their Outlook Express to open but are defaulted to microsoft mail (or other), this will fix that:

Reset OE for Send To , Mail To , Send Mail (Line 64)
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

I simply clicked on the "Send To" link, and got a download page which I ran directly without saving. After I finished doing that, I clicked on the email icon on my browser, scrolled to "Send a link..." and voilla, my Outlook Express opened to an email page containing the link, etc.

    *doing the happy dance here*

I have been a member for awhile and have found a lot of helpful threads here. Thanks again for all your help.
