Outlook Express problem

I have a problem with Outlook Express 6 that I just can't seem to tackle. I've never been able to not fix a problem with some reading online and detective work, but this one stumps me.

I like to save my emails, drag them to a folder, compress and backup. Emails from friends and family. Not a huge amount, but a good amount.

Anyway, until yesterday, when I tried this, it wouldn't work. Highlighted all the emails, dragged to the folder, and it won't work. It acts like it will for a second, then nothing happens.

I've done this for many years now, and something is wrong.

I've ran Ad-Aware, Spybot (both turned up only minor problems) ran AVG, got a few trojans (removed) and some Java things that was fixed by deleting them (as I read on here I think it was, maybe). But nothing major.

I've installed ThunderBird in the meantime, but I just can't seem to like that. It's just too different for me from OE.

Before the problem, the only thing I changed was uninstalled Nero 7 and installed the new Nero 8. But I can't imagine something in that could do this?

Edit: Forgot to mention this. I was reading on here and someone suggested (or was) running Trend Micro's online scan. It's currently at 70% and has only found spyware. From experience, I will assume for the moment that it's tracking cookies, all that Ad-Aware seems to pick up most of the time for me. And I don't think those would have an effect on this problem.

I also noticed that I can't change read only for any folder, I change it, it goes right back to being read only. But I can still do everything in them as normal.

 

Went into safe mode, didn't work.

Created a new user account, doesn't work in there either. It's probably something simple, I'm just not seeing it.

I did defrag the drive that OE is on, ran the Trend micro online thing, avg, spybot s&d, ad aware, hijack this, and a few others I can't recall. And nothing turned up anything to worry about. Nothing that would explain this. I've got plenty of free space so that's not it either.

 

I think I got it working correctly again. Uninstalled Nero 8 (among other things coudn't change burn speed and I generally didn't like the interface. Too different.) and went reinstalled Nero 7.

After installing, I tried again to drag the file to a folder. And it worked like it should.

There was something in Nero 8 that just totally didn't agree with it. Not to mention playing a video file seeking was slower, even with no Nero services running, it seemed to slow things down.

Now I wish I hadn't deleted all my folders in OE trying to fix it. Luckily I didn't delete my message rules, or if I did, I made a backup of the reg key for that.

I have another question then. Anyone know how to get messages from Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 back to OE 6?

 

Sorry to post another on this thread, but I can't seem to find the edit button.

Anyway, I found a way to get the messages back. A program called IMAPsize, and it has a tool to convert the TB mailboxes to .eml files. Then just drag them back in, and all is good.

I did learn a lot just reading in the malware forum on here. So, that's good.
