hi all, i'm trying to help a person setup their outlook. i have a few questions.

    1) how do i go about setting up a profile? i'm sure i'll have to setup 2 profiles (1 for yahoo.com, and 1 for hotmail.com), but if you have suggestions, then shoot.

    2) i would need the pop information for yahoo.

    3) i would need the pop information for msn/hotmail.

ok, now that i've looked is this not available anymore? does anyone here use outlook, netscape or anything to d/l their yahoo, or hotmail e-mails? - thx, sos

edit - regardless, if i can't use hotmail, or yahoo, i'll probably still have to setup an acct. so, can someone actually get me started. - thx

To receive Yahoo! Mail with a POP email client such as Outlook Express, you need the Yahoo! Mail Plus account, which costs $20/yr. Regarding Hotmail, see http://email.about.com/cs/oetipstricks/qt/et041202.htm

You mail set up some other type of email account? Try Gmail (Google's email service); it can be POP-enabled.

    Correction from previous post:
I meant to say, You mean set up some other type of email account?

Yes, the ISP option makes sense. Why not use it? I see info for POP setup at http://www.grandecom.net/support/faq/?cat=9#17

Where did you get "pop3.email.msn.com" for hotmail? If, indeed, the "legacy" version of Hotmail is being used, a version with which OE could be used, the account would be setup as an HTTP account, not a POP account.

I found some evidence that Hotmail can no longer be accessed via Outlook Express unless you have a paid Hotmail account. See Tip: Get Hotmail through Outlook Express.

However, also see Hey! Where's Hotmail in my Outlook Express? and Authentication fails when you use Outlook or Outlook Express to try to log on to an HTTP-based mail server if you use Internet Explorer 7

*looks around* i have no idea where i got the pop info. i'll have to see if i can dig up the link again (i'm not on his laptop now, which is where i found it). i have already sent msn an email (on his behalf). he didn't want to use his grande acct, as he is being x-ferred away from here, so his isp will change. that is why he wanted his msn acct to be setup with outlook. he does have a paid acct of msn (he has to go to hotmail.com, but when he enters his email addy, it's "msn.com", and not "hotmail.com"), i can't get a hold of him right now to verify this.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=287604 <-- How to configure MSN to work with Outlook <-- i think this is where i found the info???

of course now that i look at this, it's for outlook 2007, and i'm trying to setup outlook express 6. but, i'd think it'd be the same? - anyway, thx - sos

Well, I think - indeed, I'm quite sure - MSN is not the same thing as Hotmail. If you have a Hotmail account, your email address will be myname@hotmail.com. If MSN is your ISP, then your email address would be myname@msn.com.

Again, if his hotmail account can be setup in OE, it's going to be an HTTP account, not POP account. This is a unique situation for hotmail; it's a Microsoft thing. I'm not aware of any other accounts that would setup in OE as HTTP accounts.

ok, it is an msn account (i verified this), and he goes to msn.com (or hotmail.com), and clicks on the hotmail link. he then enters his addy as "xxxx@msn.com", and not "xxxx@hotmail.com". i think it's kinda the same, as i have dsl (which is considered a yahoo premium acct), so i can go to yahoo.com, and enter my dsl acct "xxxx@sbcglobal.net" into the addy box in yahoo mail, to access my dsl acct.

and msn is not his isp, it's a paid email acct. i figured it'd be a pop acct, but i'll have to look into that, but that's why i'm asking.

edit - notice on the right hand side, it says "MSN Hotmail Plus". this is where i finally sent an email on his behalf, hopefully he'll get it before tomorrow (so i can try to fix this problem)??!! :(

oh, and i think now, when you create an account at hotmail.com, instead of a "hotmail.com" acct, it's "windowslive.com" (something like that). - thx again, sos

thx, alot usafvet, however i think you've gone astray on me (we might need to check your trajectory). your last link is still talking about a "hotmail free acct", remember this is a paid account. i haven't been able to come up with anything myself. as i mentioned, i hope he gets a decent email response before tomorrow. thx again, sos

edit - well, your last link does barely touch on the pd acct., but i haven't found anything there. - sos

fyi, i had to check the spelling on a couple of words there!! :p

Ok, hoping it's acceptable to ask a question within the framework of this thread - don't understand/not sure why it wouldn't be (?).

I, at one time, was using something called "YPOPS" to tie-in "Thunderbird" (OE substitute) and my Yahoo! email account.

I would like to do this again, but noticed that usafveteran offered "... some Pros and Cons ..." with this sort of thing.

I'll take a look at his link there - but is anyone familiar with this "YPOPS" thing and/or know of any drawbacks to/with it?

    Thanks

PS - What I'd mainly like to be able to do is to click on the standard "Email" (or, "email this to a friend") link on an MSN or Yahoo! web-page and have Yahoo! simply "appear" (as the "default" client), rather than OE popping-up, and then having to go back and copy/paste what I want to send into my Yahoo! account.
