    To all:

I bought my wife a new computer for Christmas. The old computer ran Windows 98 and had Outlook Express version 4. The new computer has Windows XP and OE version 6.

She wants her old e-mail messages on the new computer. The version 4 files were .mbx and .idx files. However, the import function with version 6 when set for version 4, does not like these files.

Can I move these old messages to the new computer? If so what am I doing wrong?

    Pete

I am not too sure about the differences since it has been a while for version 4, but to make things easier do what I do which is easy and quick. Use Outlook Express Wizard. This shareware program (30-day free trial period is fully functional and spyware free) is very easy to use and transfers everything you need.

Once you are done, uninstall the program and keep the transfer data file as backup for future reference, buy the program if you like it and would like to have a copy but like I said the trial version is fully functional. ;)

Thanks, however OE wizard only works with version 5 or higher. This is all very weird, because OE version 6 has an option for importing version 4, it just does not seem to work.

Do you get any error messages?

and if you backed up the files from OE4 on CD they will be read only and need copying to your HD into a new folder eg. called "OE backup" and a sub folder called "Mail" copy the backed up files to the "Mail" folder ... then use the File > import > messages

if that doesnt work then this small app can extract the email messages on OE4 as .eml so you can then just drag the email files into the inbox window.

Thank you. The issue here is the folder name. The old e-mails must be in a folder call "mail" otherwise it will not work. A folder called "e-mail" does not work. If MS would have mentioned this in the Help file I would have had a lot more fun these past couple of days. For what it is worth, my wife is happy now.
