Win98SE/Outlook Express My nephew was here at my pewter and now I am unable to send email for some reason. I am able to receive email though. He said he doesn't remember changing anything. I've checked my settings and nothing seems to have changed. Oh yeah, he said he "might" have pressed "syncronize all" on the tools button. Any ideas why I am able to receive but not send? :p

I just checked on my Incredimail program and I am able to send and receive with on that program, but I'd still like to use Outlook Express. The connection settings are the same as OE which is my default.

For starters, check your OE mail account, Server tab, and make sure he did't botch the outgoing mail (SMPT) address. The fact that incoming is fine, but not outgoing, makes me wonder it that address is now missing or wrong.

Thanks G.T. I rechecked it again and all the settings seem as they should be.

In the same properties as GT said, go to the advanced tab and make sure the port numbers are 25 for smtp and 110 for pop3.

Hey mr_flea, thanks for the reply. The nbrs. are set at that, so that didn't change. My Incredimail works, so the connection is OK.

I got another idea... tools -> options -> send tab -> make sure "send messages immediately" tab is checked.

Duct tape junior to the chair until he figures it out & fixes what he broke? ;)

Wish I could do more. :p Do you think it has anything to do with pressing "syncronize"?

Where exactly is the said syncronize button?

    Under "Tools" Syncronize All

Also, when I press Send, a pop up window appears the says "Log on" with user name and password. I don't have this password protected, just the connection, and that is the same. When I press OK, it shows that the log on failed.

When the logon failed, you have a bad password. Try retyping it correctly into the box.

I think I have the problem now. Go into tools -> accounts -> properties of the account in use -> servers -> make sure "Log on using secure password authentication" and "My server requires authentication" are unchecked. Also, make sure that your incoming mail username and password are in correctly and that the "remember password" box is checked.

The last idea I have: cross check your settings in incredimail with the ones in OE.

    tough problem..

Well, the "synchronize" button should just pull whatever's on the mail server into your inbox, and shouldn't have messed up any of your settings. Since you can receive mail OK, I assume your username and password are still correct, as those would be nessary to receive mail. Are you SURE the SMPT server address is correct? Some ISPs use different addresses to send and receive, and if junior erased the send field and just put in what was in the receive line, it may not be correct.

I thought of that too. I checked and my SMPT address is OK. By the way, I'm upgrading to WinXP Pro tomorrow when it comes in. Do you think it will repair any settings?

Not sure, but I don't think so, if it's just a mis-tweaked setting. I think it will save your current settings.

One thing you might try is to wipe out your accounts entirely, and re-open OE which should bring up the helpful startup wizard, and reimput all your settings. Running out of ideas.

Thanks G.T. I'll try that. In the meantime, I'm listening to "Have Gun Will Travel". I'm enjoying the commercials as much as the program. :D

I'll post tomorrow & let you know how I made out. Thanks again to you and Mr_flea (bag) :D

So we saved Junior from the duct tape! Glad to hear it. :)
