Need to reformat my Hard drive on my Toshiba Laptop.

Can anyone provide the procedure to backup the particular folders that contain my inbox subfolders/emails and also the contacts/email addresses folder.

Then what is involved with importing them back into Outlook Express after i reformat the harddrive.

    Thanks!

One of the most important things to create backup copies of, is your email messages. Here's a short guide on how to do this if you use the Outlook Express mail client.

    Copy the following folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{long sequence of numbers and letters}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

to a backup location (blank CD, Zip disk, backup HD, etc.).

    ---------------------------------------------------------

To import the email back into OE:

    1) Open Outlook Express
    2) Click File - Import - Messages
    3) Highlight Microsoft Outlook Express 6, and click Next
    4) Choose Import mail from an OE6 store directory, and click OK
    5) Browse to the location (folder) where you backed up your email and click OK.

That's it. You've now imported all your old emails.

This is especially useful for clean installs of your operating system, or moving emails to a different machine.

Pay attention to the provided link, since this will also backup your contacts.

Another item to backup is your favorites. Typically located within:

    Documents and settings\username\favorites
    or on 9x (me) boxes
    windows\favorites

All you need to do from within OE is click file then export and you can do both messages and contacts. Just export them and save them wherever you need to so their backed up. After format just do an import. If you want to find the actual folders and save them your looking for .dbx files. You can find those files by doing a search and make sure have hidden folders viewable searching for *.dbx. It's a long path going through My Documents. The exporting and importing works better in my opinion though. Here is Microsoft's link how to do backups:
