Outlook "operation failed" when send/receive

    Howdy folks,

After an uninvited guest visited my computer:mad: , and after we cleaned up his/her mess, a problem persists and I wonder if it indicates a larger problem.

When Outlook is not running, it checks for mail at regular intervals. When program is running, and I click "send/receive" the error "The operation failed" appears. When the program is running, it still checks at regular intervals.

It is possible that we screwed something up during twelve hours of cleanup, or it may be something malicious from the visitor.

    It is weird. Any suggestions.

    Thanks,

    Idiot_D

I assume your uninvited "guest" was a virus/trojan of some sort? And that it's receiving OK but not sending? It may have trashed some files or registry settings for Outlook, in which case a full "repair" of Outlook/Office may fix it.

If that doesn't cure it, try deleting your accounts and set them up fresh. It's possible the account settings got corrupted, which a repair won't fix, as those are personal settings, not program settings.

    my anti-guest

The guest was not just a program but a person, and he left behind some viruses and trojans, etc, which theoretically we removed all of.

I will try the Outlook repair and report back.

    Thanks,

    Hello,
I tried tried the outlook repair, no dice. Same problem.

Panda scan turned up nothing. We have been running adaware pro. It turned up some stuff which we got rid of and now it shows we're clean. We may have run spybot, but I was out of the office so I will get back about that.

Xflat - regarding a dialer calling 900 numbers. There is no phone hookup (cable modem), so I should be fine there?

G.T., actually it sends okay, and receives too, for whatever thats worth.

I suspect we screwed something up on the registry disinfecting, but its a puzzle to me.

    Thanks all for the input.

    Well...

Only think I can think of is you have Outlook synchronizing with something.

Thats the only time I've seen this error, yet been able to send/receive.

I don't know Outlook 2003 well enough to check if it is, however.
