For some reason Outpost has to be disabled, then the browser started, in order to connect to the internet. Once the initial connection is made, Outpost can be enabled & it will work and the internet connection works. Why is this happening? I have XP Pro SP2.

I have been having this problem also.

It seems one of the drivers(1025 I Believe) is a little buggy. It seems to go away if you turn the automatic updates off. All the updates really do is try to urge you to buy the Pro Version. If it gets really bad you can uninstall and re-install with the auto setting off.

BirdBath, thanks. How do I turn off auto updates?

When the main screen of Outpost is open click on help in the toolbar in the upper left and then uncheck Automaticly check for updates.

In the other thread you were asking if the free program updates. It will update when you use the manually check for updates. It will tell you the version you are using is out of date and ask if you want to upgrade to the pro 30 day trial.

Click on No and just install the updates.

BirdBath, after I installed it I disabled auto-updates from the HELP menu, then I did the updates, then I went back to HELP, and noticed that my Auto-updates were greyed-out. Now I can't do any updates other than upgrading to the PRO version. Does this Free version protect your computer if there are no more updates? I don't get it. Is the Pro version supposed to be an update to the Free version even if you don't buy the Pro version after 30 days?

A firewall is not an anti-virus program. It works along side your AV by blocking unwanted network or internet traffic. You set up what you want to have access to the web and what you dont. It will block other programs from getting into your system but if you "Allow" certain programs to penetrate your firewall your AV will detect any nasties. When a new versin of Outpost Free is released you will hear about it on Majorgeeks or you can always check the Outpost Website.

Your computer IS protected by Outpost. The update to the paid version is just a way to get some money for the programers hard work.

Zone Alarm Free is more popular IMO because it seems to be Doing More by telling you there are updates when the "update" could be as insignifigant as they decided to change the color of the Logo or something.

If you dont feel comfortable with outpost you can use the other free ones but be assured you ARE safe with outpost. :)

OK, BirdBath. The first time I installed outpost, I did not turn auto-updates OFF and they still got greyed-out. GREYED OUT as in I can't turn it OFF or ON anymore.

So I uninstalled outpost, reinstalled and turned OFF auto-updates, did the updates, and then went back to auto-updates and they show a check mark beside it (which I unchecked to begin with) AND the whole thing is greyed-out. Greyed-out as in I can't turn it ON or OFF anymore.

    Mine is greyed-out also.

I was having the driver problem with the Trial version now that I think about it and thats when I did what you did. Uninstalled and re-installed with the auto-update off, and chose the free version with the updates. My mistake. It runs fine now though.

You can still get updates from the site. You just have to install them manually.

Auto-update is a service for the paid version and I am assuming that is why it's greyed out. You still got the updates that were offered when you installed the free version and when a new free version comes out you will be able to upgrade to that free version. Does that make any sense?

Are you still having this problem?

Have you allowed your browser access to the internet?

Here is a shot of the application plug-in for outpost. This is just how I have it set. It is NOT by any means how you should set it, just my preference.

At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services part of the registry to construct a list of services that it must load. Multiple instances of Svchost.exe can run at the same time. As you see I gave it full access and also IE has full access. If you use IE. as your browser you have to let it access the web and SVC must be allowed to also. This could be why you are having the problem when first starting your browser.

Birdbath, Yes! That's mostly what I wanted to know, that is, if the free version has updates ANYMORE. I've tried several "leaktests" on this version and so far it's not doing very well, so if there are updates, they can't be very RECENT ones.
