For now I just jack my laptop up (using 2 errasers) to allow some ventillation.

I have had some problems like yours with dell inspiron 1000's after installing more ram, any users whom i have fixed of this were leaving their notebooks on "forever" so to speak running up the work of the machine, then come back to find it turned off, which it did so to save itself, some p4 notebooks only run the fan when needed so fan may not spin al the time, how long have you had this laptop? turn off and blow some can air in there see if you get some dust out of it.

I have had my laptop for exactly 1 year. I think I will try blowing some can air into the ventillation holes (the fan exhaust).

Ya I do keep my laptop switched on all day and turn it off at night. And usually it gets heated and turns off when I am running multiple programs for a couple of hours.

I put my laptop next to a fan and the problem is solved.

Anyone got any better ideas ???

I never had an overheating problem but I know with all pc's heat is the enemy. I purchased a laptop cooler made by antec. It is usb powered and has two fans drawing away the heat. It makes some noise but you get used to it and really does a good job. My laptop fans only come on half as much now.

There are some external fans that can be put under laptops. I don't know exactly where to get them but look on www.newegg.com
