    Hey people.
I was wandering if there was any software to download which would allow me to adjust the sound frequencies of my PC like an equalizer. It would need to work overall, such as for the internet and other programs like songbird and VLC.
I know most multimedia programs have an equalizer installed but I need mine mainly for when listening to music on youtube and the internet in general.

    Thanks :)

Good question . I did some googling and found a program called WebEQ . I have NOT downloaded it or used it. Although it is not a free program, it does appear to allow you a trial version for free. http://www.blazeaudio.com/products/webeq.html
Also, found some possible solutions on this page : http://en.softonic.com/s/sound-equalizer.
Please keep in mind that I have not downloaded or tried any of these programs, I just thought it was a good question and realized I wanted to know the answer as well - although I think the best thing of all would be to get yourself a soundcard (they really aren't that expensive these days) .

Thanks. I recently installed that WebEQ program but it doesn't seem to open when I start it. I haven't restarted my pc since I installed it though so ill give it another go later.
The other link you put looks useful. Might give some of those a go until I find one that suits me.
    Thanks again :)

This question interested me because, as a musician of more than 25 years, my hearing isn't quite what it used to be and when using headphones, often the volume of my media files isn't loud enough even with volume maxed out and EQ's cranked up .
On the other side of the coin, if I'm not using my headphones, I have a monster brand cable 3.5mm -> 2 RCA male (right and left channels) to which I connect to a 300 watt Kenwood stereo system, at which point I don't have any problem hearing what I need to hear, and the stereo has its own EQ as well .
Have you considered an audio card ? They have dropped in price dramatically over the past few years .
There are even USB sound "cards" if you have an aversion to doing surgery on your computer, and I would bet the drivers/software included with those would have an EQ included that would affect all sound emitted by your computer .

No I havn't thought about getting a sound card. Im looking into it now though now you've mentioned it because my speakers make a crackling noise when playing music. Its at its worst when audio and video are playing together, like in a youtube video/song or when im watching a show. I kind of fixed it by changing my sound settings from 24bit 44.1kHz to 16bit 44.1kHz but doing this only shifted the crackle to lower frequency notes, so now when I have low bass notes playing it crackles really bad (whereas before it was just overall sound which made it crackle). Could getting a new sound card, like the usb ones you suggested, fix this problem do you think?
    Thanks :)

What type of speakers are you using ?
If you can find a link to the exact brand and model, that would be perfect .

I have 2 JVC S-PX1 TWE and 2 Panasonic EAS8E002-A (unfortunately I can't find any links or pictures of them but the JVC ones are pretty big and have 3 speakers in them; one 1.5", one 2" and one 5.5" and the Panasonic ones have one 5" and one 1").
I have one of each for each channel (left and right). I don't think its the speakers though because when I plug in my cd player in to the amp (in the same place as where I plug in the laptop in a port labelled cd) they don't crackle. I thought it was dust in my laptop crossing circuits but i've taken it apart and blasted it with air (there was hardly any dust there anyway).

Ok, so you are also outputting your sound from your computer's 3.5mm output to a split RCA (right and left) to a stereo, which your speakers are connected to ?
First thing I would do is check the cable between the computer and the stereo/amp . Just jiggle it around near the jacks and even roll the cable between your fingers while there is no music or other sounds playing, but the speakers have power and the computer is on, and its all hooked up. If you hear crackling then, you know what the problem is.
Are you using the same cable to connect your CD player to the stereo/amp as you do to connect you computer and stereo (amp) ?
Also, what make and model stereo/amp are you using ?

Yes, I have a 3.5mm jack which plugs into the headphone socket of the laptop leading to a red and white RCA connector which plugs into my amp. It is a different cable to the one I use for my cd player to amp connection, which is a cable where both ends are red/white RCA heads.
When i jiggle/spin the cable in the 3.5mm socket in the pc, there is no crackling made; with or without sound playing.
The stereo I am using is a Sony Dolby XO-D101SCD, which is a set stacked stereo with one double casette deck, built in radio, a 12" vynil player on top and a built in amp with 2 5 channel equalizers (one for left, one for right audio). I have had this setup for a while now with no problems. I haven't used it with a computer until now however. The laptop is fairly old though, I think (between 3 and 5 years old, not sure exacty when it was bought).

Well, it appears we have ruled out the stereo, cable and the speakers, so you know what that leaves .
Out of curiosity, where are you located ? As I have been unable to find your speakers, OR your stereo, or any references to the models as you list them here, anywhere on the internet .
At any rate, I would look into one of the USB sound cards .
In the meantime, if you have any other sound devices that you can hook up to the stereo and check for crackling, i would do so, to further eliminate other possible problems. At this point, I'd say the problem lies within the computer .
Anyone else that might be reading this thread that may have something of value to add please do so .

I think the assumption that the problem lies within the PC is accurate, check all connections for a good fit, check all internal power connectors for an equally good fit.

It reads like there's some 'leakage' of signal that needs dealing with.

@satrow: the sound system is connected to a laptop, not a desktop so I can't really make sure all the connections are in place. However, when I took the laptop apart to de-dust it, I did make sure all connections were dust free and properly connected. Thanks for your reply btw.

Im in England. The speakers were bought off some random guy in Birmingham (if I remember correctly) along with the stereo system. I did find a few pages on google about my items but none of them had any pictures, especially now that google doesn't do an image search anymore (why?), the pages were just spare parts and other technical information but no images. I can assume that the system is fairly old though (roughly 10 years maybe, give or take a few years).

I thought (and feared) it was a problem with the laptop. I have found a usb sound card though which im in the process of buying now. I'll keep you updated on whether the sound card helps or not.

Thank you soo much for the help :)

If you go to www.google.com , you get the original google screen which includes the image seach and all the old things you are used to (you can even go into your browser settings to make THAT your home page). It sounds to me like you are using firefox, and the google homepage for firefox is different, especially FF4, where the url for your google homepage is "about:home" . Alternatively, you can simply type your subject, followed by the word "images" into your google homepage searchbar .
Let us know how the soundcard works out, and I personally would like to know which one you get .

Holy cow I had not heard of this until just now .
Geez, these malware writers need a job or something better to do than trying to ruin people's computers .
    Pathetic .
    Time to install NoScript.

Man this NoScript makes web browsing a real pain. I also use Flashblock, so when i go to a page I havent been to before, I have to go into a clicking flurry to get a simple animation or information video via flash - for example today I've been looking for a specialist Doctor, and I'm clicking and clicking and clicking on one single page just to get the informational media to work .
Not sure If i want to keep NoScript, but I'm gonna leave it on for now.
