I am playing Neverwinter nights 2 with an unsupported card (so far it has been slow, but perfectly stable), the Jaton geforce 6200 256mb agp4x/8x. My fps of course are terrible (2-10 fps depending on the in-game settings), but I still enjoy the game. I really like to play with shadows on which chops the fps by about 50%.

I down loaded nvtweak to allow overclocking and I wanted advice on how much and if it will help the fps (even a 1-2fps increase makes a noticable differece to me). Should I just allow it to "detect optimal frequencies" and go with that? (It went from 350/800 baseline to 390/878).

I am in the process of RMAing a better card, but untill that gets worked out, I am stuck with this one.

    Sys specs:
    Dell 8250, agp 2x/4x
    p4 2.8 533
    windows xp home sp2
    512 rdram 1066
    card as above

You can stick with the optimal frequency setting or you can start from those values and bump it up in 5mhz increments. Once you start to get artifacts on the screen, you've gone too far and you need to bump it back down. Just make sure to watch your temps and take it slow, testing every bump in speed.

Also your 6200 uses the same core as the 6600 it just has four pipelines masked. You can unmask the pipelines, and if they're ok, your 6200 can basically function as a 6600. Here's a link about that might help you out.

I did this a very long time ago to my 6800NU to make it an Ultra, so I really can't remember what the change looked like. However, I believe the change would be reflected in the current settings as in "4X1, 3VP" for default would be changed to "8X1, 3VP" after the unlock near the top of the page.

I don't know for sure, so if you want to be certain, you might be able to find a similar guide on Google.

Hmm. I tried to unmask the extra pipelines, but when I follow the instructions, it seems to lower the pipelines instead of raise them: I go from
"4pp, 3vp" to "2pp, 3vp." Am I being cut off from those extra pipelines by my 4x agp slot? The displays on the 2.0 rivatuner read slightly differently than those of the article.

I benchmarked the overclock changes to 395/888 (with no changes to the pipelines) using 3dmark05 and only gained maybe 60 points and at best 0.4fps increase, so maybe its just not worth it. Oddly, 3dmark is reading my overclock as 395/445! I don't understand why.

Well the ram is actually running at that speed, but since it is ddr ram , it effectively runs at twice the actual speed. 890 or so....

I did find out that the unmasking can take place only in the NV42 geforce 6200 processors. The NV43 or 44 cannot unmasked.
