Hello, I don't know much about overclocking a CPU, so I am wondering if some one could help me. I have an AMD Athlon 1.0GHz processor(Thunderbird) and I would like to know if some one could help me try to overclock it. I read from a site about Thunderbird processors, and something about AXIA, but, my first problem I have is getting the heatsink and fan off my cpu. Anyways, I don't know anything about overclocking, could some one help me?

I'm not quite sure myself but i believe there are settings in your BIOS that will allow you to do so, such include frequency settings. But like i said just have a little browse in your BIOS settings. Do be careful though when changing anything, because yea, u might kill it, lol. Also you might wanna google-search to see what is the maximum clock speed (before it overheats too much =P ) for an AMD Athlon 1GHZ, at that speed i wouldn't imagine very fast, and you mentioned something about removing the heatsink and fan off your CPU?

yeah, I tried removing the heatsink and fan, but it seemed impossible. I got the fan off, but I don't know how to remove the heatsink... I couldn't explain much about it, I could send you a picture of it, but I would have to do that later, because I dont feel like opening my tower up, its 3:21 AM here...

heh ok, aren't heatsinks usually strapped down with clips though, don't you just simply lift the clip up and pull the heatsink off or i'm guessing urs is more complex than that... =S

Yeah, its got clips on it, but I cant get them up, probably thinking to goes the other way or something, I've tried pretty much everything, even brute force, still couldnt get it loose, maybe it's welded on it... hehe, I'll take another look at it then...

Well, it doesnt really have clips like most processors do, it has these things attached to the heatsink, I never could figure out how they detach from my heatsink, i'll take a picture of it and post it in here.

Well, I couldnt take a picture, it was to dark, im going to have to do it another time... the clips seem to be made into the heatsink, where u have to disconnect the clips from this little plastic peice, im guessing that surronds the CPU. Probably will need a screw driver or something and pry the clips off that little plastic peice, what im trying to find out is if it is an AXIA model, if it is, then I will know if it will be possible to overclock it to around 1.5ghz, which would be really nice to have.

If your ganna hit 1.5 youl need better cooling thunderbirds run HOT. I had a 1.4 that ran 1.5 @ 400 FSB and it normaly broke 140F ....And no offince but if you dont know how to take your heatsink off overclocking is not for you...( a slow system is better then a dead one )......

:-\ My computer is about 5-6 years old, I've had since I was about 11. I never really opened it up till this year. I dont know, I guess I shouldn't try to overclock it, it's the only computer I have, and I dont have any money to get a new one.

Well there ya go, just take Ace's advice and steer clear from over-clocking unless you got a friend or know someone in the IT industry who can lend a hand.

Your probably better off getting an old mobo and buying an amd xp; should be very cheap.

Yes, I realized that. I am getting an AMD Sempron and a AMD Athlon processor sent to me from Sweden, they are most likely faster than my current proccessor. I am going to probably buy me a cheap mobo to support that processor, maybe 256 or 512MB of RAM, and a better graphics card, and I should be set. By the way, the processors im getting are for free, so it should save me about 80$. Then i'll probably install Linux and on it to, which is also free :).
