Overclocking problems

    Hello,
I recently posted in the drivers section about a problem (and fix) for the whole atikmdag.dll has stopped responding error. When you remove CCC, atikmdag.dll no longer exists and up until this point, I had not had a problem.
I have an ASUS MR232-MVP (580x chipset) motherboard and an athlon 5000 black edition brisbane cpu (2x2.6ghz). I also have a sapphire ati radeon xt 2600 HD video card.

The card, mobo, and cpu are all made for overclocking (the mobo has an unlocked multiplier and is easily overclocked). Everything I've read indicates that the cpu should be stable up to 3 ghz with a vcore of 1.35'ish.

Anyhow, I plan COD4 and MOH: Airborne.

When I OC the cpu to 10x (from 2.6 to 2.86) ghz MOH runs fine, however COD4 will have a video card issue and I will get "The display driver atikmdag.dll has stopped responding...." even though atikmdag.dll or atikmdag.sys do NOT exist in my computer (see above removal of catalyst control center.)

If do not overlock the cpu, and I try to overclock the GPU (even just a little) I get the same error for both games.

If I do not overclock anything, both games run just fine (a little lag in MOH, but nothing downgrading the settings doesn't fix).

By the way, I have a 550W power source, and I am running 3 primary fans, one thermaltake cpu fan and of course the fan on the video card.

FYI, i use ATI Tool to optimize the fan settings on the GPU and the temp never gets over 60C. The highest I've seen the cpu temp go is 41C and the highest I've seen the mobo temp go is 38C, so not a heat issue.

    Any ideas?

    :confused

Read the overclocking guide. Run S&M. Overclock one thing at a time, test for stability, test for stability, test for stability, then when your 110% sure its stable (S&M stable and prime stable, I'm not talking about running your game with out crashing stable). Then move on to overclocking something else GPU RAM etc...
And if you overclock your CPU and not the video card ? If you use a decent overclocking method you would know exactly whats causing the problem.

When I only OC the cpu (leaving the video card with its standard clocking) to 10x (from 2.6 to 2.86) ghz MOH runs fine, however COD4 will have a video card issue and I will get "The display driver atikmdag.dll has stopped responding...." even though atikmdag.dll or atikmdag.sys do NOT exist in my computer (see above removal of catalyst control center.)

Thanks for the reply btw (I have read the guide, I have friends with virtually the same pc specs as mine, and they aren't having similar problems.)

    Thanks Ace.
After reading the manual, and doing a bit of research, I successfully got my cpu oc'd to 3.2ghz. I've been using it for 16 hours with no problems. I haven't seen the temp go above 41C either. I still have issues when I OC the video card, but i found I had some driver issues.
Those were resolved and the video card feels like an entirely different card, so no need to overclock it.
    Thanks again.
