Hello everyone, I have cut the cord with Cable TV services.
I am in the process of getting setup to stream movies and video to my TV by way of my computer. When I stream to my computer my CPU heat sink gets hot fast and the fans run at high RPM. I cleaned the fans and surrounding area (they were not really very dirty). I also ordered Thermal paste (has not arrived yet) so I can re-paste the heat sink. I am grabbing at straws though and want to ask if anyone can offer a fix for this problem. I am running an old IBM Think Centre, Intel Pentium, 4CPU, Win XP SP3, 3.2GHz, 2GB Ram. I know this is a nothing computer but it is all I can afford, and normally it works wonderfully. Most videos from youtube run without the getting hot problem. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Are you using onboard graphics?

    Welcome to the forum:)

Are you sure your cpu is even overheating? The heatsink will get hot if you decoding video's even more so if you have onboard video as JP said so this is perfectly normal, do you have any other symptoms ,does the computer crash, slow to a crawl, or shutdown?

Download speedfan and post your temps, stream a video that overheats your cpu then post that temperature also, ignore the flame next to the temperature it doesn't mean they are too hot.

I do not have any other symptoms because as soon as the fans rev up and get noisy I stop the streaming. When I stop the streaming the fans slow down. I always run the computer with the top cover open and there is always a ceiling fan running in the room when I am using it. I hesitate to download anything...I have had too many bad experiences down loading things that are supposed to help. My computer is clean and running beautifully, I do not want to mess it up. You say it is normal for it to heat up so I'll just accept that. I am using the on board Graphics Card to answer JP. One more question...if I let it continue streaming after the fans rev up, will the computer shut itself down before it is damaged by the additional heat?

Yes most older pentium 4's will throttle back automatically if they become too hot then throttle back up to full speed once they've cooled, there's also a damage threshold shutdown which will shut the entire computer down before any damage is done.

The program I linked to is just a temperature monitoring program it won't make any alterations to your computer, it doesn't have any extra bundled software and is clean from malware but I respect your choice. Unfortunately there's no way to check cpu temperature in windows so my help ends here.

Well if your happy:) Feel free to return if your computer becomes unstable...

Hi Sargent, Are you by any chance in Afghanistan? To answer your question my model is 31U that is fully read as 8171-31U. Do you think a better CPU cooling fan would help? I've been looking at them but I am not sure what socket number I have. Again I hate to download another App or what ever to find out. Do you think you can tell me what socket number I have from the information I have supplied? My wild and uneducated guess would be eityher P4 or 775 but I could be way off. Thanks again. P.S. I was a Sailor many years ago.

Disregard the Afghanistan question in the previous message, I thought you were someone else. Thanks

Your PC uses the Intel 900 GMA series for graphics, which uses your CPU for some of it's work. A separate graphics card would remove that extra load off your CPU.

Your PC has a PCI Express x 1 expansion slot. Here are some cards that will work in your PC: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...7709 600007854&IsNodeId=1&name=PCI Express x1

You have a socket LGA775 CPU if you decide to go with a quieter, more efficient fan.

JP, That's great information. Now I have something to work with. Thank you for the suggestions. I am going to look into them right away.
