My friend a week ago said she was getting a over heating error message on bootup and to shutdown the machine. When I took apart the machine cleaned all the dust out the pc would not boot up pure black screen. There is a green light inside the mother board and initially the fan was spinning. The power supply seemed not be moving. Do you think the power supply or possibly the mother board is fried??

Hey mike, When you switch the PC on, does it sound like it is booting up and do the drive lights come on and flash?

Have you tried booting any sort of live CD or repair disc?.... if not do so.

If it's not doing anything after that then it is most likely a PSU failure. which will need replacing

If it is attempting to boot up and or successfully boots a disc, then it's most likely a windows or a HDD problem.

I would try a different power lead before buying a new PSU but it is most definitely a power issue of some sort.

You said earlier their is a green light on the MOBO is that still lit?

Could you plug an ipod or digital camera or something similar in and see if it charges from the USB port?

When I choose the power button the light area goes green. fan doesn't spin, power supply doesnt spin, green light on mother board and thats it. The PC has a antec 300w output sl300s power supply would it. If I were looking for a power supply to replace it with how would i know which one to buy? Would it be a similar 300w atx/ps2 output?

Yeah pretty much, if you have any worries though just take it out and take it the shop with you or buy the same one again.
