Overheating problems

It seems my computer has been overheating all week I have no idea why it seems to be turning off every hour or two when I'm gaming, and it's even worse of a problem on more demanding games. A friend recommended a program called Speedfan that I just got and the most astonishing problem seems to be the "Internal Temperature" which is reaching 107 Celcuis! It's also warning me about the "Temp1" and "Core" which are going between 50 and 60 Celcuis while I'm gaming. Tonight my friend recommended I buy some sort of fan to place on the "chipset" and says I will probably need a new motherboard because mine will have permanent damage due to this high temperature. Does this make sense to anyone?

I've also been having problems with my graphics tweeking out with many video applications. This happens a primarly when I Alt-Tab in and out of games. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to MajorGeeks!

First off, clean the dust out of your computer case. Next, start the computer up with the side panel off and make sure all the fans are spinning. If a fan is not spinning or seems really slow, replace the fan. Re-check your temps.

If it is still too hot, place a household fan blowing on the computer (with the side panel off) and see if that helps.

I always use my computer with the cover off because I've had overheating problems in the past. The dust is clear and all of the fans that I have are working: CPU, video card, power supply, and 4 auxiliary fans. I'll try to get a household fan and see if that helps.

I left my computer off for 30 hours and I really don't understand how SpeedFan is reading the temperature at 90 C when I just turned it on, it should be around room temperature. This program has to be wrong!

Perhaps it is a software issue. Is the heatsink on the CPU warm/hot to the touch?

I'm not entirely familiar with hardware terms but if the heatsink is the copper piece that runs from the CPU down to the chipset then yes Fred it's really hot, as is the chipset cover. I've been experimenting with other temperature reading devices and it seems that the CPU/Core seems to be overheating if I run games on my computer. I have no idea why unfortunately, I have a nice CPU fan that is spinning at over 2100 RPM. There's no dust, and there are plenty of fans running cool air throughout my case. How would overheating be related to a software issue?

It would not be related to overheating. You are correct on that. I get different temp readings with different software programs. Just trying to eliminate possible problems.

You can get an inexpensive chipset cooler like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835425007

Is the computer overclocked by any chance? 4 case fans should be aduquate for most any computer. You might want to try Core Temp to check the temperatures also. http://www.majorgeeks.com/Core_Temp_d5665.html

You said you had overheating problems in the past, how did you remedy them? Also, what are the specs of your computer?

How can I check to see if my computer is overclocked? In the past I've remedied the overheating problem simply by clearing out the dust and leaving the cover off of the case, this doesn't been to be enough this time. When I run demanding software all of these temperature reading programs are reading that my CPU and Core temperatures are rising to 80-90+ degrees Celcuis before my computer just turns itself off. I've created a specs report using Everest, there's a lot of info here so let me know what you need. Maybe I can email you an attached file. Here's a summary:

Well, from what I can tell, the CPU is not overclocked. Sorry I am not being much help to you.

The only things I can think of would be to reseat the CPU heatsink and use some good thermal paste like Arctic Silver. I am pretty sure this is not the problem, but double check to make sure your case fans are mounted properly (intake fans blow air in to the case, exhaust fans blow out.)

Have you tried it with a household fan blowing into the case yet? I am assuming that you are not using the computer in a hot room...

The problem seems to be fixed. I found a spare CPU fan with the metal heatsink and switched it out with my current one. There was this silver goop (maybe thermal paste?) that was on the CPU. I rubbed that off and put the new fan on. Thanks for your assistance Fred!

Glad you got it fixed! :clap

You did clean of the CPU and new heatsink and apply thermal paste right?

  12. Crazy00Eyes

    Crazy00Eyes Private E-2

Yea, and the new CPU fan already had some paste on it where it covers the CPU so I didn't need to buy any paste.

Well, I think the AS5 would be the way to go, the stock stuff is ok sometimes.

Re: Overheating problems SATA external seagate

    hello,
I just bought seagate ST9250827AS 250 GB hard disk with transcend
casing, on 7 th october 2008. (bangalore)
whenver I try to do some sort of heavy work, like copying large data,
disk check, external hard disk gets heated upto 52 degree celcious and
casing also gets heated too much.
genarally for data tarnsfer and movies , songs, twmp will be around 43-44 degree C

Is there any problem in hard disk? Is it intended to operate at this
    much higher ranges??

    waiting for you reply

gauri_2984: Welcome to MajorGeeks! You should probably start a new thread for you question http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=22

I would think your drive temperature is ok, but am not sure. You could put a casefan blowing air over it to cool it.

yes fine but still external drive should run without fan also, becoz we cant carry it everywhere
