I've been looking at getting a new 60" widescreen T.V. (HD ready) and it is supposed to work at 1024 x 768. Anyone tried this yet with a newer T.V.? It seems to good to be true after pricing monitors as the T.V. is under $1600. I thought gaming could be VERY cool with this setup.

1024x768 is not a widescreen resolution. I wonder if the image gets stretched... Or if it puts black lines on each side... In any case, yes it could be very cool.

One thing of note is to be careful if it is a projection TV. The image can be burned into the screen if left on there long enough.

my friend has a cheaper Sony 50" Rear Projection HDTV.. native resolution is 1920x1080 (16:9)

we tried hooking his computer up to it using DVI (since the TV has it) and it works decently...

its better than a regular TV for obvious reasons... but it still is not near acceptable for use as a normal monitor.

gaming doesnt work in wide screen, only in standard resolutions with black bars on the side... and is playable to a degree. its not quite as crisp as a monitor... so you'd be at a disadvantage playing games on it... but its still cool... especially if you are playing and want others to be able to watch!

Thanks for the replies guys, it is a rear projection and it was at Tweeter (it's in Illinois, not sure if they are nationwide). It might not be on sale anymore or it might have just been at the store near me also. Would a flat panel T.V. work better than rear-projection? RP is SO MUCH cheaper and I have the room for one.

Actually some games do support true widescreen. UT2003 and 4, GTA:VC, and Tribes 2 are some that I can think of off the top of my head, but yeah, most games don't support widescreen resolutions.

sorry, i was in a hurry... goin to get food... mmm ;)

I was just sad to see FarCry not work in wide screen

anyway, Tater, i'm not a fan of rear projection myself... i'd rather have a small HDTV (CRT, Plasma, or LCD) than a huge RP. The viewing angle of RP's are abismal, and the clarity is severely lacking IMO.

but to some its enough (my friend for one... he loves it).... and for the price i cant say its a bad idea... just not my favorite

Try the LCD type projection TVs. They have no burn-in problems like the old CRT type projection TVs, from what I've heard.
