    Hi Ace 256?
thanks for a very comprehensive explanation on overclocking.
My problem, if it is a problem, is as follows:-
I have a P4 2.8E (Prescott) and I've overclocked it slightly to run at 3.02GHZ.
It functions well (so far) and there has been no discernable increase in temperatures either on my CPU or system.
I overclocked simply by increasing the fsb from 204 to 214 that gave me an extra 0.2 Gigs.
I'm happy with this although I noticed that the recommended core voltage of my cpu was 1.3875. However it is still running at 1.3volts.
I remember surfing an overclocking test and the person there recommended running the cpu core at 7.175. My bios on an Abit board gives about 8 settings for the core voltage from 1.375 up to 7.375.What does this mean?
If my setup remains stable at 3 gigs could I safely go further and what method would you recommend., bearing in mind that I don't want to mess my bios settings up too much.
I would really appreciate your help and advice

A V core of 7+ !?!?!???! :eek ....So let me get this straght.. Your running overclocked and your core is running undervolted ?? Whats the down side here ?? Overclocking its self does not make a chip ( notacably ) hotter and does not shorten the lifespan of a chip ( again notacably 8 years VS. 10 years.. eather way the chip will be horably out of date by then ) ... but overvolting the chip ( something you normaly need to do to get a chip to run and any good OCed speed ) shortens the life span and makes the core hotter ( more V core hotter chip ) So if you are running overclocked and undervolted you have the best of both worlds running cooler and faster ;)...But i whould run your chip at atleast stock voltage if you plan to run it any faster then you have it now... Have you ran prime95 and/or mem test ????

    thanks for your advice.
I actually increased the core voltage of my CPU from 1.3 to 1.4. Remembering that the default voltage was defined as 1.3875. I thought 1.4 was near enough.
However, the cpu didn't increase speed at all and the temperature didn't increase either, so i decided to continue running it at 3.1 Gigs, o/clocking my 2.8gig cpu.
The temp is normal, 48.5C at cold start then increasing to ariund 50C when running normal programs. When I run Far Cry at highest rate it does increase to around 57/58C so I think that;s not really too bad.
I've decided to rest on this.
Still don't understand why increasing the core voltage did not increase cpu speed but no matter.
    Thanks again for your help.

Think of a CPU ( or any chip for that matter ) as a cars engine. Simply pushing more gas into it wont boost horsepower ( it will prolly run worse ) now if you put a turbo on it and new carbs and what not..... the engine will need more gas for it to run right .....

    Hi again,
for all those kind members who offered me advice with my annoying hard disk problem, many thanks!
However, the news is that I've fixed it. Don't know how but after many attempts and much software it seems to have fixed itself! Problem is I don't know how it got fixed so this is no good to anyone.
Further to that I've solved my original high temperature problem simply by downloading a bios upgrade and flashing my bios.
Since then my idling temperature for my P4 2.8 Prescott is 39 to 41C and the ambient tremperature here is around 24C. system temp is 27C and PWM is 32C.
So...........many thanks for all your help, I feel much safer running fast games now.
    AND I'm still O/C at 3.1 Gigs.
    core temp is still 1.34

    Cheers to all :) :)
