I currently have a P4 CPU (2.6GHz,400MHz Bus speed,512KB L2 cache) I can get a P4 (2.8GHz,533MHz Bus speed, 1MB L2 cache) Both are socket 478. Question is- Would the 2.8 switch out with the 2.6, and what kind of performance difference would I see?:confused

You didn't mention which motherboard you have, what you propose is a waste of money IMO. If you can't pop a dual core in there....., really no point for a relatively small incremental increase of performance. Save the money for a new machine. Sorry.:)

Motherboard is Asustek P4G533LA. No money to be spent or lost. 2.8 is freebie given to me by a friend.

Mostly interested in how difference in Bus speeds and L2 cache size would affect performance. Only thing I would be investing is a little time.

Well, if you have a stopwatch you might see a difference. Hey, I never say no to a freebie either, should work but the ASUS site is giving me headaches again trying to check.

    Hi

Wont find much at ASUS on that mobo sadly as its a OEM build one for HP/Compaq machines and nada on what max cpu it will take on HP either. Board name is P4G533-LA (Echo) takes the Intel Willamette, Northwood series. Did find some info on upgrades on that mobo at the HP forum here seems 2.8 is the most you can get away with in that mobo.

200mhz difference wont be earth shattering but will be better than nothing.

Appreciate the call-back,Halo. I have a 2.8GHz P4 478, but not compatible. 2.8 is 533 MHz FSB. Won't work on the mobo.:cryAlso,2.8 has larger L2 cache(1MB) compared to current 512KB:cry:cry. Would have been nice.

Hello to Halo and augie. I can get a Biostar mobo that handles the 533MHz FSB for $60.00. Would the performance difference justify the expense? That job I could handle.

No, I still stand by my opinion. It will be faster, that's for sure but is it worth $60 to you? That's an old socket, I have a s478 Celeron machine gathering dust somewhere too, you obviously don't game so I see no point to this upgrade. Enjoy what you have and keep your money in the mattress.;) Usually adding memory gives more of a performance boost than anything else. By the way, how much RAM do you have?

    Hi hrlow2

I would agree with Augie, in that if your going more bang per buck, I would save up and go Core2Duo or AMDx2 with new mobo and ram as you can at times pick up some decient barebones kits from some online retailers for around $200 (need in some cases to add HDD and GFX card, plus Monitor, KeyB and Mouse... but as some of those items you may already have that maybe compatible....*more research would be needed as this is just a suggestion over actual guide to parts*) , as a 200mhz increase is not going to really seem much different to what you have now IMHO.

Ram is a really good idea and jumping to over 1GB adds some performance if cost of new self build PC is out of the picture for now.

I was thinking more along the lines of, if the OP had something like 128 or 256MB installed and just moving up to 512 would really improve performance. Been there, done that with my Celeron.;)

Machine is already maxxed at 1GB.

Well, not much left to say then. Have you tried disabling unneeded services as per blackviper's site? Stopping unneeded programs from booting up? Oh, what programs do you normally run? I can't think of anything more, maybe someone else has an idea.

I use WinPatrol, and it shows only 10 startup programs( 7 of which is AV,firewall, and antispyware). Same showing for services. Don't want to remove those. Machine working OK as is, so will leave well enough alone. Thanks everybody for all responses.
