P4SD-VX Cannot reinstall processor (Did I just ruin it?)

I took out the processor on my motherbord to clean the dust off the heatsink and it would not fit back in when I tried to reinstall it. I'm guessing I have to remove the whole god damn thing from the case but I don't know what good it will do. Theres a black piece of plastic screwed in around the socket (so I can't align the pins by looking in from the sides) and the screws wont completely unscrew so I can remove it. With the heatsink it is very hard to see where the pins are going and I already bent a few trying to put it back in. Is the chip ruined even if I aligned the pins almost perfect? Whats the best way to put this back in? One more thing I noticed next to the socket theres a little plastic lever that moves the whole socket up a little if I lift it. PLEASE HELP.

The arm beside the cpu has to be lifted up to release the cpu, take heatsink off first, if pins are straight, it will be alright. fit cpu in socket, hold down with finger slightly, push locking arm down until it clips in holder. ed

How do I take the heatsink off? I tried pulling it off the chip but they seem to be glued together. I didn't lift up the release arm when I first removed it because I couldn't even see it with the god damn heatsink in the way, is it ruined?

You will have to take a razor blade or something similar around where they join together, the thermal paste is old and has semi glued them together, be fairly careful, dont just pry them apart, work your way around the cpu with what ever tool you come up with, just be patient, it will come loose. ed

You really need some thermal paste to put back on the cpu, if you dont have any watch temps very close . Oh, WELCOME TO MAJOR GEEKS

Ok I got them separeted by twisting it off, I took some extra that had collected on the sides and spread it on the middle and I got the chip and the heatsink back in place. Now a new problem, the little black plastic thing that holds all this shit in place snapped when I tried to put it back on (my ****ing luck today is shit) What can I do to hold this shit in place? I tried some tape but that wont hold I'm sure, also how can I monitor the temps once its all fixed?

Not sure what broke, are you talking about the lever arm that locks the cpu down? ed

Yeah its the black arms with the green lever that you push out into the middle to unlock it. I tried turning my computer on long ehough to put in a temp montioring pogram. One of the censors was reading 62C so I quickly turned off my pc, now what?

P.S. I really appreicate your help guys thanks!

*Edit* It defentally appears that I'm going to need something to hold the heatsink in place because it had started to peel back from the processor which is probably what made it overheat. Can I order this specific part somewhere?

I am guessing that this is the heatsink lock on a p4 intel, does it hook in 4 places and you flip the arm one way or the other to tighten the heatsink to the cpu. If you can find a local pc shop they should have these laying around from dead motherboards. Good Luck. ed

Ok now what about the thermal pase? Will a thin layer of extra from the sides be enough?

Thats a hard one to answer without seeing how much is there, it dosent take much, some people say the size of a pea, some say the size of a grain of rice, i put a thin coat on the cpu and heatsink and have never had any trouble, if you got enough to smear around with your finger i would guess that would be enough. ed
