Hi I have read most of the threads about the Realtek HD audio driver but none are having the same problem I am able to install it but I get no pop up saying hey you plugged something in when I plug things in and there is no sound whatsoever when i installed my PCI sound card (which is like ancient) it worked fine with no drivers but I don't want to use this sound card because 1 its not ''XP Ready' 2 its from another computer and 3 i want to use the ''HD'' audio my system specs are:

    Asus P5N-E SLI board
    2 x 2GB RAM
    Geforce 8600GT
    Intel Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz
    XP Pro SP3
and I dont think the rest is important

anyway with this board came the disc obviously and the Realtek drivers which install and give me the system tray icon and tells me everything is as it should be but i don't get any sound out of the front and rear ports also as far as i know i am meant to get pop ups when i plug in the speakers or headphones or mic etc and i don't get those either, i have looked on Asus' site and after some really slow downloads i ended up with sound max drivers.... WTH? does Asus not know what sound chips its motherboards have? seriously  anyway when i use my PCI sound card everything works fine without the drivers possibly because its not XP ready and doesn't need drivers (i dno) anyway any and all help is appreciated but please bare in mind i am not a software programmer and am relatively new to reg editing etc but I am not a total novice.. thanks in advance.
    :)

SP3 does not provide for support for HD audio, but you can fool it into believing it is SP2, install your HD audio drivers, and then tell it is SP3 again.

Goto Start>Run and type in regedit , then click OK.
Click the plus signs in front of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SYSTEM, Current Control Set, Control, and finally, click Windows.
In the right panel you will see CSDVersion.
    Right click it, choose Modify.
In the highlighted input window, you should see 300. Change it to 200.
Click OK, close regedit and restart your PC. Windows will now think it is SP2 and allow you to install the UAA and your HD audio driver.
Make sure to reboot and then test your sound BEFORE, changing the value back to 300.

Then follow the same steps to change it back to SP3. Change the 200 back to 300.

BTW this driver will work, if you can't get the right one at ASUS:
Realtek High Definition Audio for 2K\XP\03

One more thing, have you enabled the on-board sound in your BIOS?

musksnipe thanks very much for your reply but i have had this problem with XP SP2 as well but I did try your solution... it didnt work:( I'm starting to think its not the drivers/software because I think it hasnt worked with Vista either... Do you think it could be the hardware? can onboard sound not work but everything else on the mobo work fine??? because its been like this since i bought it i think... thanks again and if anyone else has any ideas or yourself please do post them if you can. i appreciate your help.:)

It's very possible it could be a hardware problem, although most times, it is a configuration or driver problem.

Look in Device manager>System devices. Does Realtek HD Audio Controller or the MS UAA Bus driver show there?

Have you installed your chipset driver to be sure that all your motherboard hardware is able to be recognized?

Ya, that was my issue with my new P5Q board last night and I'm pretty sure our BIOS's are pretty close, device manager had no !'s even though the drivers loaded from the install disc. Also check in Control Panel/Sound etc./ Advanced audio controls and see if anything is muted. This is just a shot in the dark.

augiedoggie and musksnipe thanks for your replies but its def enabled in BIOS and I re-installed the chip set drivers to be sure
In Device manger I have MS UAA thing but the Realtek HD audio is somewhere else and no yellows or reds. I think i am going to try removing the Bluetooth drivers because they have some audio features as far as I know because under sound in device manager i have Bluetooth AV/HS audio i don't know if that could be interfering... even though its disabled, if this doesn't work I'm going to partition and make it dual boot with vista to see if that will work, even though I hate vista:-D thank you very much for your efforts and if you or anyone else comes up with more ideas, I'm all ears.
