Have you checked that the cables are seated properly and check to see how the drives are selected i.e.. master/slave and cable select, also check in the bios to see if they are detected.

You might try going to Toshiba.com and searching their support for a download of the driver for SDR5 112 (be sure to type the search term for the drive model exactly as listed in Device Manager - spaces, dashes, etc.).

    Packard-Bell.

I haven't heard that in a LONG time. Curiousity begs me to ask, what is your model number?

Does it run XP, or Windows 2000?

gman863, don't confuse European Packard Bells with US Packard Bells. The OP lives in Scotland.
I was one of the lucky people. I bought two different models of cheap PB computers at Walmart and they both worked well for me. I ended up cleaning up the newer model, and shipping it off with the software to be used in a school on an Indian reservation.

Point taken. I was just being a bit sarcastic (or is it realistic?) about the US models.

During their final few years in the US, PB tech support and repair parts seemed to be almost nonexistent. As a Dept. Mgr. I had to face the wrath of customers who were having problems getting warranty service.

when I go into the device manager then properties in the box that give u the device status it says

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

I know this is going to make me seem stupidly thick but what does that mean?
    Pleeeeeeeeaaaassseee Help :(
    Thank You.

    When it says
it means the computer can not see whatever device you clicked when you selected properties. You failed to mention what you clicked and since Device Manager lists all the hardware in your computer, it is impossible for us to guess what you selected. I suspect it might be a CD or a DVD drive.

    code 41 is there.
