Page Defragmentation

For months I have used a page defragger which is nothing more than an .exe file (pagedfrg.exe... got it from sysinternals) in my Programmes folder. Once a month I use it to defrag my pagefile on start up. Today I clicked the .exe to set the startup radio button to defrag on the next boot and a red alert box came up saying "You do not have the neccessary priviledge to run this programme." There are no Administrator privileges set on my PC and never have been... so where does this little message spring from and how the devil do I get rid of it so that I can use the programme again?

 

Have you installed some anti spy-/ad-/mal-ware utilities lately (Like Spybot) ?

Maybe they have locked down access for making changes to certain parts of the registry to protect you from yourself.

The pagefrag modifies the value "BootExecute" which resides at this registry-key:

This place is also the location of "Userinit" which sometimes are changed by malware to intercept your system.

You can try to start regedt32 and see if the permissions for the above registry-key have been changed, so you don't have access anymore.

Sys internals are very reliable , and trustworthy.
and usually self executing . sic , relying on self execution , instead of installation , and registery placement...,
Your prob may be from a 3rd party something??
