Page file size......

Ok... I know the recommended pagefile size is 1.5 times the amount of RAM in the system...

Is it really needed to have that much.

I have 1Gb of PC2700DDR.. do I REALLY need 1.5GIGABYTES!!! of pagefile...?

Anyone care to chime in on this one?

 

here's the short version.. if you're using NT/2k/XP and higher.

Open up your task manager; performance tab.. bottom left shows COMMIT CHARGE (K). take a look at your peak. That is the maximum that your system has used in VM. tack on say another 100 MB on that number and set that as your page file size.

Quick question.. lets say I do something that needs more than is available.. I am assuming all that would happen is a performance bottleneck... is that true?

Or should I have a fire extinguisher and the garden hose handy?

 

Win2k/XP is nice enough to increase the amount needed automatically.

 

XP will say that your virtual memory is too low and increase the swapfile for ou. You'll take a performance hit during the resize. Honestly with !GB of memory, you'll hardly ever use your swapfile.
