I was reading that one way to enhance system performance is to move the page file from the system partition to a non-system partition. I don't see how this accomplishes anything. Can someone out there explain it to me as I'm curious about this.

You have to have enough free space.
Page files are unmovable, the page file might take up spaces
near system files and lead to fragmentation, later on.

One way to optimize system is to defrag the page file.
You can download the tool from sysinternal site.

The most effective way is to use two separate drives, one used normally and the other solely reserved for the page file.

That can speed up performance as you basically now have two drives doing the work that normally one would do.

Obviously you would have to have a drive at least as fast as the system one or the exercises is pointless, and the extra cost also becomes a factor.

Personally, I don't think it's worth it, but that is up to you to decide.

You can also temporarily turn off your paging file as well as defrag in Safe Mode, but again I haven't found any performance improvements.

XP does a much better job in this area than Windows 9x, so it may very well be beneficial on those operating systems or on different configurations, but it wasn't on mine.

Just to add to my reply, another benefit of having a drive solely reserved for the page file means it won't suffer fragmentation like the system drive does.

I've yet to see a performance improvement from any "optimised" defrag program on an NTFS partition.

On FAT then yes as they are susceptible to fragmentation, but NTFS is much more robust, negating any tangible increases you may see.

    Me too.

Also to add a small bit more.... I do have my page file on a separate HD and if there are any speed increases they are so small I cannot see the difference, BUT one thing I would add even tho XP does manage the PF well ... I do find that you will have even less fragmentation of the PF if you make the PF a fixed size thus eliminating the increase/decrease of the PF.

Say rather than have XP manage it at min 256mb ~ max 756mb variable PF, try fixing the PF at min 756 ~ max 756.

Yeah, I've heard that too but forgot all about it. The logic behind it certainly sounds good.

Might give it a try and see, thanks.

Defraging the page file is only benifitial if it is fragmented.
To check use the inbuilt defrager to analyse the partition with the PF.
If the green part is not all one chunk then you need to defrag.
If you tend to have lots of ram this will not be benificial.

I heard that the min size of PF should be 1.5 times the RAM size.
And max size should be double that.

If anybody tried out fixed paging let me know the benifits.

To force Windows to completely utilize system RAM
until it absolutely need the harddisk swap file.

    Add this string

    'ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1'

    in the system.ini file
    under the [386enh]section.

Best way to edit system.ini is msconfig method.

    Backitup.

Yet no performence improvement on my system.
