My computer has 1 Gig memory and I am not a gamer (I know woe is me). Since I have never seen my memory go below 500 meg. do I need a page file? (The computer seems faster w/o it). If yes, is it better on a second drive?

I have seen recommendations of from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 times the memory - If yes, how much?

Let controversy rear its ugly head again!!!
Very much discussed issue ....from those that feel less that 100% to those that feel it should be set at 150% of ram ....it would really be up to you and how your system runs, however ...without a page file you will not be able to retrieve any memory dumps (after a BSOD) ....same holds true if you put your page file on a different partition/drive. To start off, you might set it to the 500 mark ...if your physical ram needs never drop below that.:)

Lately, I've been letting windows handle the page file.

If one really needs the space, that the pagefile is using, they can cheaply get a larger hdd.
