    hi there everyone,

as you can see this is my first post, and i HOPE someone out there can point me in the right direction.

i do not even know if i've put this in the correct forum, so i dont mind if i am moved, any how here goes.

my son recently bought a new laptop, win xp,sp2, bulldog security, ie 6, i set up a wirless router/modem for him to go online with broadband. it worked ok for a while but now he is getting the "page connot be displayed" message, the strange thing is that this is not happening on all pages, just certain ones. i tried everything i could think of with no success, so i then brought the laptop to my home to give me more time to work with it, lo and behold it worked no problem, using my wireless network all the sites that he could not get onto at his house worked ok at mine!! so, i took the laptop back to him and what do you know it would not access the sites again, i am not talking about anything risky just normal everyday sites.none of the settings were altered so how can this be, if it was a router problem at his place would that not stop all internet access?

i hope someone out there will take pity and point me in the right direction,

    many thanks john d

If you were logging on to the same user at his house and at yours then it sounds like either the router has had some type of parental controls enabled or perhaps the ISP has enabled them. If your not good with configuring a router you could try just restoring the defaults. If that doesn't work try contacting the ISP.

    thanks geek-a-hertz,

that is one of the conclusions that i came to as well, it was the same user that i was logging on to at his place. can the router or the isp actually have parental controls in it's settings ??

    thanks j.d.

    shnerdly,

he has wanadoo as his isp, and is using a cable and wireless router, do you think that these are possibly at fault??

Is the cable modem and router in a single unit and what is the brand and model?

You could try calling wanadoo and see if they have some type of filtering turned on and then go to the site for the router and see what options are built in.

And yes, either one of these could be causing your problem

    shnerdly,

the router is actually made by cable and wireless, and it is all in one unit, i have just had a look at the online shop where i bought it from and it says it does have parental controls by "keyword blocking" this is it at:- http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6768061.htm

this would make a lot of sense because most of the sites that he could not get onto were connected with trucks or trucking,(he is a truck nut,age11)!!!, do you think he could have inadvertantly blocked these himself with a related keyword??
i can not try anything untill tomorrow when i will see him next but i will definately look at this then, many thanks,

    j.d.

You may want to read up on the router. It may have capabilities beyond just KeyWord blocking like blocking specific sites. I would suggest reading the manual and perhaps using your browser to enter the router and check the settings. Go through every page and see what it can do.
I hope you find what you need in there.

    hello again people,

tried suggestions but to no avail, reset the router back to factory resets and checked its settings but there does not seem to be anything that can explain why i cannot access certain sites, it is the same sites all the time that i cannot access but there seems to be no apparent pattern to them. i shall call the router makers helpline tommorrow and see if they can shed some light on this problem. thanks for your assistance so far, i will post the outcome in due course.

    Technical Bulletin

    Brand - Cable & Wireless
    Product code - HSADLSR15CW3
    Description - ADSL High-Speed 108mbps Wireless router

Issue – When connecting to the internet with this router only, some websites are available with other websites either not being seen or displaying problems.

Reason – Within the router settings there are settings for DNS servers. Since this model was introduced the UK DNS server default addresses have changed and so the default settings do not translate typed website addresses into their correct IP addresses.

Fix – Short term fix is to delete the routers default DNS addresses and so force the router to obtain new addresses via the customers ISP. See below for details.

To force the router into obtaining the new DNS addresses please log into the router set-up screen then select from the menu on the left hand side WAN Configuration > DNS and you will see a screen which displays the current Primary and Secondary DNS addresses . Go in and delete the numbers in the Primary DNS and Secondary DNS boxes and then click the Apply button. Then close down the Internet browser Window, wait for 30seconds then continue with your Internet browsing. This will force the router to retrieve the new changed DNS addresses from your ISP.

it did not mean much to me but it certainly stopped me pulling out more of what little hair i had left.

many thanks again to everyone, hope this can be of some use to other members.

Thanks for posting that info. That will definitly help others when their having trouble. In fact, forcing any router to update it's DNS setting could improve things overall for others. I know I'll try and post this near the surface in my brain so I can recall it when a similar situation arises.
