Page_fault_in_non_paged_area

Newer Compag laptop, XP Home, SP1

Gets a blue screen with the above reference error message whenever trying to run Spybot or Spysweeper in regular mode. Doesn't happen in Safe Mode.

Any ideas?

Typically this error is related to faulty RAM. Try a new stick or two and see what happens. XP requires 128MB minimum. However, I would recommended a 512MB minimum for XP.

 

Since this is a laptop, how many memory modules are installed? If two, try taking one out, and see what happens, if the same thing happens, replace the one inside and put the other in.

Also, bare minimum memory for xp is 64, but 128 is recommended. I did test this recently with only 64 megs of ram. Xp ran very slowly but worked.

Yes, it's a laptop and it has 512 Mb. Not sure if it's one stick or two.

This actually started happening around when I began removing a ton of viruses and spyware. I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but thats why I was leaning more towards software than hardware.

Try one of the memory testing programs from here like MemTest etc.

I've never used one, so I can't offer an experience, but what is happening to you does sound like faulty or incompatible RAM. (Although you do say it doesn't happen in Safe Mode)

At least rule that out first before the next step.
