Downloaded this PageDefrag v2.32, as suggested by GreenKnight32 from this link in realtation to this thread:

After using this app and requesting a defrag at next reboot I restarted my computer and noted it ran very quickly but upon loading my windows profile page I became a bit concerned as several icons that normally reside in the lower right hand corner, i.e. next to the clock, were not present but to be honest I had recently uninstalled Startup Monitor because I had WinPatrol and did not see the need for both and I cannot ascertain whether this happened and affected the loading off background apps.

I opened Windows Task Manager and also noted that they were not active so I opened Scotty and reactivated what I thought was important (i.e. PestPatrol (keylogger & memory check).

Several other apps within my security suite are not loading and I was wondering whether the should be present in the sys tray or only when I scan with them:

    MS Antispyware
    AVG
    Spyware Doctor

    Any suggz would be appreacited

Pagedefrag is a great app. It only runs before boot. And I doubt it could even remotely be the cause in your situation. AVG should start at desktop and be running in the tray. Not sure about your other 2 apps.

Yes I assume it was the uninstall of StartUp Monitor, bugger. Do you know which aspects of AVG should be running as background processes? Could you look at your task manager and tell me out of the following as to what should be running and then I can tell Scotty to allow these.

For instance do I need to just add bootup.exe to my startup monitor to have it running in the background. Probably a dumb ques but I am learning every day.

Here is a screenshot of the .exe files for both AVG and MS antispy. As can be seen there are quite a few diff .exe files within both and for the layman it is rather confusing.

I think another option maybe to uninstall WinPatrol, Scotty, run all my security apps and reinstall Scotty and "allow these programs" as I have still have the seed. Any advice appreciated.

So what is the actual problem?

The prob is that MS Antispy and not sure about AVG run background processes that help maintain your sys security while on the net. It seems with the uninstall of grc.com StartUp Monitor I have inadvertantly switched of the allowance for some of these background processes that provide the extra security. Now I want to allow them again while using WinPatrol but when I go into the Startup Programs tab and try to allow either of these apps I am finding numerous .exe files and I am not sure which ones I should allow via WinPatrol for the extra security, any suggestions? or as stated in previous thread would it be best to uninstall WinPatrol and reinstall as I want this extra security.

I don't think you need to uninstall WinPatrol. Just run the apps, if their startup processes have been shut down, WinPatrol should ask if you want to allow each of them. Just click "Allow", WinPatrol will remember them from then on.

Also let me say, I agree with Shataan, can't see any way PageDefrag has anything to do with this.

Yes I have to agree I doubted it was the PageDefrag as I was posting the intial thread but just wanted to explore these doubts. MS Antispyware and AVG still do not appear as icons unless I start the apps manually and even then WinPatrol does not ask for their permission.

So I am still confused about this issue is MS Antispyware Real time protection on even if my icon is not in the bottom r/h corner?

The MS Antispyware logo doesn't appear on my computer when it's booted up until its scheduled nightly scan, unless I manually open the program's controls. It still pops up a warning any time a new startup program is installed, though. On the other hand, the AVG icon is always there, but it's usually hidden, and I have to click the little arrrow next to Scotty to see it. If it's disabled it unhides itself but is grayed out, to remind you it needs to be re-enabled. It also pops up a balloon with a warning message if it's disabled.

If you hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and for MS Antispyware these processes are running then MS AS is working wether their is an icon in the sys tray or not ( I generally have the icon always in systray but may have set it to show in the actual softwares menus )

    gcasDTServ.exe
    gcaServ.exe

and to double check AVG check for any processes relating to that app.

Thanks again I will check for these running processes WRT MSAntispy on next restart. I have noticed that MSAnti is flashing up responses to any changes in sys functions and thus I assume realtime protection is active. Also it is good to have any unnessary icons removed form lower r/h sys tray but just want to make sure I haven't compromised sys security, integrity, etc.

AVG has still got me confused as when I click on but dont run it I find I have three avg.exe processes (avgamsvr.exe, avgcc.exe and avgupsvc.exe) running which is what I had until I uninstalled StartUp Monitor, but firstly I dont know whether these are necassary to function as background monitoring processes or whether they are just manual processes. I will research these individual processes at answersthatwork.com and assess things from there, but if anyone uses AVG could you please check processes that running at startup and post them.

    Just noted this for:

avgcc.exe; "...your PC will continue to be protected against viruses by AVG irrespective of whether or not AVGCC starts automatically at Windows startup."

Frustratingly I cant find these other two on the site but there are 3-4 others which dont seem to be present so Google time

Those are the normal AVG processes. It's working fine.

You can customize whether icons in the Notification Area (that's what the bottom right corner is officially called) are hidden by right-clicking on the Task Bar and clicking Properties.
