    Hi guys
Iv got this problem every tyime I go to a facebook appl. called farm town
yep im a farm town addict I admit bol
anyway the question is every time I go there the pagefile increases its memory and it runs slow
I know that required amount of ram is 1 gb ( im not that clued up on the ram lingo so you must excuse Me if it wrong )
My system is Xp home edition
    2,234 ram
I have brought all the programs down to a bear minium
    have a comodo cis running
I just was wondering if there anything else i could do to increase the ram memory apart from installing a another ram
I have defraged it and clean the cache every time i start up but it still runs slow
    thanks

Several things can cause a slow system...
How many applications are running and/or in the system tray?
Your connection to the Internet- Both DSL and Cable fluctuate during the day-# of users,# of connections to the site, etc

That said no one application should bring a system to a halt.
You seem to have plenty of memory---2.25 gbs of memory(I think that's what you mean)

Try running the following and see what the difference is

    CCleaner available here at MG's...

    Then
A different kind of defragger Defraggler also at MG's

and last a guide to effectively using CCleaner

    Thanks for the info
I checked the ram again and its not gb but mb :-D ( i told you I not well up on this bol ) at the moment it has 2234mb in ram and 28 when its in safe mode
the page file still increases when i start the appl
I know that it uses 180+ mb when its running
when I ran the defrag you gave me there wasnt must there to defrag but i ran it anyway
I have already got cc cleaner which i use instead of the windows cleaner

is there away around this virtual memory thing as it seems to shut some services down whilst it increases
and is there a limit in which you can increase the virtual memory without compromising the system
    thanks

Hold the windows key down and hit the Pause/Break key.

In the System Properties dialogbox choose the advanced tab

    click on Performance options

On the virtual memory section click change

Don't change anything yet just post what it says

Should have asked how big your hard drive is.

Your pagefile is way too small. Will suggest some alterations when you post the HD size.

according to the label its 40gb HDD

    thanks

That's a small drive compared to your RAM memory size.
It must also be quite old since I think they stopped making them before the first 1Gb memory modules.
So I would think about transferring your whole system to a big modern drive in the near future.

Are you sure you don't mean 400GB?

Anyway to your pagefile. Windows expects the pagefile max to be in the region of 1.5 times your installed RAM which makes the max size about 3G. This is a significant chunk of hard drive, especially if you also have hibernation turned on which has a similar sized file.

So we need some more information.

How many partitions (drive letters) have you got and how full are they.

Windows key again plus the letter E this time
Right click on each drive letter (ignore floppy, CD removable etc)
Choose properties and record the pie diagrams.

Do you know how to turn off hibernation if it's on as I don't think you can afford the space.

Bol :-D I had it several yrs in fact its an advent intel celeron M 360 1.4 ghz
    laptop computer
anyway here the ifo according to the piechart it has 6.05gb of used space
    27.gb of free space
    the capacity is 33.2gb

as for turning of hibernation no i dont know how to do that

just got the basic partition which hold the system drives
is there a way of looking up the drive memory as i may be wrong

40G hard drive usually has about 38 available after formatting etc.. Having only 33g means you have a hidden recovery partition. There should also be a utility to create a recovery disk if you haven't got one but have a cd writer.

I would set both the intial and max sizes to be the same an increase the amounts allocated in 500Mb (half a GB) steps until the performance is adequate. So go for 1G then 1.5 G etc.

Just put the numbers into the boxes and click OK.

To turn off hibernation (it would end in tears one day anyway)

Right click in a blank place on the desktop
    choose properties
    click the screen saver tab
    click the power button
click the hibernate tab and uncheck the box
    click apply

Do this and restart before upping the pagefile. Windows will delete the hibernation file on restart. You can check how much space you have gained on the drive.

    iv done it thanks
but it only allows me to do it in mb so i made it both 500 unless you can tell me what it is in 1.5 is in mb :-D
now i have 27.5gb free space
    and 5.6gb used space
    thanks 4 your support

an off the thread question here
what is the diference between a note book and laptop comp as when this one finally gives in i might invest in another one
and can you use the internet if you got a notepad

'notebook' is the marketing name that manufacturers use for what the public call a laptops.
These days all laptops/notebooks have internal wireless and usually an ethernet network port (socket) for internet.
There are smaller ones about now often called 'web-books' . These come in two varieties, separated by about £75. the higher priced ones have Windows, the cheaper ones have a system called Linux instead. Many users like Linus, but it is not for beginners and a bit confusing if you also use windows pcs.

    1gigabyte = 1000 megabytes
    1.5 GB = 1500 MB
    2GB = 2000 Mb
    etc

    Defragmenting A Page File

I have not changed any of this post other than adding these few words, Hope this helps, the link above is where this came from but it starts at the beginning of: What is a Page File & on through to monitoring a Page Files Performance.

The Elder Geek is so full of Knowledge:

    http://www.theeldergeek.com/paging_file.htm

There are two approaches to defragmenting a page file. One is free; the other costs you some money but is well worth the expense. The phrase 'by design' crops up a lot when talking about XP and here it comes again. By design, Windows XP will not allow a page file to be defragmented when the computer is online. Online in this case does not mean when it's connected to the internet, but when it is powered on and the operating system has been loaded and ready for use. This is why you can defrag 1000 times from inside XP, check the defrag log page file section and it will never show it being defragmented. To get around this problem using the free method, it's necessary to:

    Eliminate the fragmented pagefile

Create a temporary page file on another drive

    Reboot

Defragment the drive that held the original page file

    Eliminate the temporary page file

    Recreate the original page file

    Reboot

It sounds worse than it really is, but it's easily accomplished using the Virtual Memory property sheet and the standard disk defragmenter utility that ships with XP. If you don't have a secondary drive to create the temporary paging file just eliminate the current paging file, reboot, recreate the paging file and reboot once more.

If you're willing to spend a few dollars, read about Diskeeper at the Executive Software International, Inc site. Diskeeper is actually the defragmenter utility that ships with XP. If you're wondering why you'd pay good money for something you already have, the version that ships with XP is a stripped down version that doesn't include a fraction of the features that the full Diskeeper product contains, including the ability to defragment paging files using a method called Boot-Time Defragmentation. The links below will convince you of the desirability of upgrading the included XP defragmenter utility.

The Limitations of the Disk Defragmenter Tool in Windows XP (Q314848)
    Diskeeper vs. Built-In Defragmenter

Just so there is no confusion or doubt, I have no stake in Executive Software International, Inc. or Diskeeper. There may be other products out there that do an equal or better job, but I have experience using Diskeeper and highly recommend it for use with XP. Nuff' said.

Be aware that if defragmentation of a paging file fails (goes wrong) for any reason, Windows will not boot. So you will have a bigger problem on your hands than a fragemented paging file.

That is the stated reason Microsoft do not include it in their deframentation proggram.
