Paired RAM won't work.

After all the issues I've had with my computer, I finally Formatted the sh!t out of the HD, installed Windows ME (it was the only thing I had on hand) and it works. i did this on another computer.
When I tried it on my computer at home it also worked: I had previously removed the 2GB RAM kit and put back the 256MB chip. Then I put back the 2GB kit and it just keeps rebooting. I took one out, works fine, changed chips, works fine, changed slots, works fine. Paired up, no!!!!!
Then, I paired the 1GB chip with the 256MB chip, and that works fine!!
So, why is it that the two 1GB chips don't work paired up?

Windows ME cannot handle more than 1.5GB of RAM, so when you try to run it on 2GB the OS freaks out. That's why it works on 1GB plus the old 256MB--1.25GB is below the maximum.

You'll need to get your hands on a Win XP disc if you want to use the two 1GB together again. Sorry.

 

Okay, that explains it. I had a major virus issue prior to this with XP installed. I have Vista but I returned the DVD reader after installation on a new computer (little patience that I have..). I will borrow it again and install it.
