I'm having problems installing drivers for an add-in card that I need for a custom-built computer for work.
    Comp details
    Mobo - ASUS Sabertooth X58
    CPU - i7 920
    OS - Win 7 Pro 64-bit
Mobo BIOS - Latest Version 1304

    Add-in Card Details
    StarTech PEX1S1P952 - http://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapt...UART-1-Port-Serial-1-Port-Parallel~PEX1S1P952

I can install the parallel port drivers with no problem. File recognized from the included driver disc and installation proceeds with no problems.
The serial port drivers will not install from either the disc or a downloaded file from StarTech's support site. Extracted driver file to 2 different locations, Downloads and Desktop, and still no go on install. Neither the 32-bit or the 64-bit drivers will install.
Contacted StarTech support and went through the install procedure again from both disc and file and the same results. The tech said his file was the exact one that I had.
Last suggestion from StarTech was to check for latest BIOS version which was on-board at installation.

I have run out of options that I can think of. I have not contacted ASUS Support yet about this.
Are there any other avenues/possibilities that anyone can suggest?

    TIA

Some more information on this problem for motherboard experts.
Under the Advanced Tab and under Onboard Device Configuration, there is a Serial Port1 Address.
    Default Address - [3F8/IRQ4]
    Other options - [Disabled] [2F8/IRQ3] [3E8/IRQ4] [2E8/IRQ3]

With this PCIE card, would a new address be advisable or disabling it altogether be an option?
The PCIE slot is an PCI Express x16/x1 slot #2. (#1 slot is available by the video card. I was trying to keep some separation between cards for air flow.)

In Device Manager is there a yellow exclamation mark under Ports (com & Lpt)?

No tgell and I appreciate the reply.
The ports category shows fine with the following -
    Communications Port (Com 1)
PCI Express ECP Parallel Port (LPT3)

However under Other devices (with a question mark) I have -
PCI Serial Port with a yellow icon.

Also in the time after posting I tried the following -
    1) Changed the address of the Serial Port1 address in BIOS to all options including Disabled with no effect.
    2) Changed location of card to PCI Express Slot #1 with the parallel port drivers being installed at boot up and a notification that a serial port needed drivers. In this slot also I changed the BIOS Serial Port1 address to all options with the same negative result on driver install.

You downloaded the zip file from their support site. Right click the device with the yellow exclamation mark (PCI Serial Port) and in the driver tab select update driver. Browse to the unzipped folder. In the 64 bit folder select the OxPCIeSer.inf file.

    If that does not work:
From the specs in the manual I noticed that this card uses a PLX OXPCIe952 chipset.

Download this driver on this website

    EXP14 Serial 1-Port ExpressCard(OXPCIe952) OXPCIe952

It is a zip file. Unzip to a folder in an admin account. You will notice it has a Windows_Serial and Parallel folder. In the serial folder is a subfolder AMD64. I believe this is the driver with inf file that may work for you. Right click the yellow exclamation mark and in the driver tab select update driver and browse to the inf file in the AMD subfolder. Please see the Readme file. Good Luck.

Damn thing doesn't support Win7 like their site says it does.rolleyes
I can get the driver to install but on reboot the device won't start with a Code 10.
Guess I'll have to go with a serial to USB converter which I was hoping to avoid. (More $ down the drain.):(

    Thanks for your help tgell.

I found another card with the same chip that is supposed to support Windows 7 64bit but do not know if it will work for you. I would uninstall the Serial Controller in other devices first. Then reboot.

If you look at the manual for the card it explains on page 4 the way to install for windows 7.

Another option may be the chip maker. But, you have to register in order to download the driver. I have not tried that though. There is also a download for a serial driver installation guide.

Well, hallelujah and saints preserve us, the damn card does work in serial mode.:celebrate

@ tgell - The driver in that file was the same as one of the previous non-working drivers. (The one that would install but not start on reboot Code 10.)

@ falcon - That driver did the trick finally. It came up great and on reboot, did not throw any errors. In running my digitizer software, it came up and recognized the digitizer and moved it to COM4 port since COM3 was already in use.
I know someone explained before, but could you tell me the actual procedure you used in finding that driver from the hardware information. I would appreciate it as I might need it again and would like to have that in my "toolbox" so to speak.;)

There is two way finding the driver through hardware id's

first way is that : go to

    http://www.pcidatabase.com/

searching the driver by either vendor or device , look this ( VEN_1415 ) and ( DEV_C101 )

    PCI\VEN_1415&DEV_C101&SUBSYS_C1011415&REV_00

second way is searching to Internet using Google search , put the above the code finding the right driver !! :wave
