partition H/D for swap file?

Dell replaced a faulty d/top with a refurb unit, and a 128meg ramstick. It's a little slow, but no real prob's, except for one graphics app that I use for a document process - no games. The app shuts down when the page file usage approaches .6GIG. Yup - 595 megs - with only the 128 RAM!

The H/D is a 40 G, with 30 G free, and it stays close to that always.

I want to partition the disk, and assign the swap file to the partitioned sector.

    1) Of the free 30 G, how much do I section off for the swap file?

    2) Will I create a 'primary' partition, or an 'extended' partition? (or a logical drive?)

    3) How do I make exclusive use of the partition for the swap file?

Any other ideas? I've already maxed the VM settings to near 500 mb.

    1. I've never seen the pagefile go larger than around 2GB. This doesn't happen if you were to specify the size, or specify that the pagefile be a system managed size.

    2. Your primary partition is typically your system partition, or the one with the OS installed. You would want an extended partition.

    3. See this link for instructions on how to move the pagefile.

However, I would save yourself alot of time by simply adjusting the settings of the pagefile. It should be 1.5 times the amount of RAM you have installed. In your case, this would be 192MB. To do so, please follow the steps below:

    1. Right-click My Computer
    2. Select 'Properties'
    3. Select the 'Advanced' tab
    4. Under 'Performance' press the 'Settings' button
    5. Select the 'Advanced' tab
    6. Under 'Virtual Memory' press the 'Change' button

Here, you can select the radio button beside 'Custom Size', 'System Managed Size' or 'No Page File'. Be sure that whichever you choose, you press the set button afterwards. You can the press ok ot exit the open dialogs. This will require a restart of your system.

Thanks MADA, for the swap assignment link!

My page file pegs at .6 ( six-tenths ) GIG - about 597.0 MEG. Sorry about that confuser...

Also on the VM settings... the minimum setting is indeed at 192 megs (you know your stuff), and the max is at 494 megs. That's what I meant by the 500 meg max VM setting.
