Partition hd without formatting it

  1. Hey guys,
I was considering downloading a beta of windows vista to see how its coming and get a preview of it overall. I was wondering if there is a way to partiton the hd without haveing to reinstall my norm windows xp setup as i dont wanna lose the current winxp setup but when the beta is out on vista I want to be able to delete the partition and reflag the block as free space for my normal windows xp operating system. If there is a program capable of doing this please let me know.

Partition Magic will do it. But be careful. One mistake & you are hosed.

Im sure that there is some other way to add or remove a partition but I used a program called partition magic to add a second operating system. Really simple to use. I think cnet downloads has a trial version of it available.

  4. Hey thank you for the reply. I will look into it soon.

Which version you downloading from MS Connect? get the latest as its the most upto date in terms of driver compatibility.

Make sure you do a backup of your data, my documents, favorites, email folders, etc, in case of problems.

  7. Im probably gonna get the latest one halo. I really just wanna get it to see what it is gonna be like and get a feel for it as i plan on upgrading from winxp to it when the full version comes out. But in the meantime i plan to slide it onto a 20GB partition and leave the rest of my drive for my norm system setup on winxp. When the trial runs out i will just use partition magic to delete the partition and that should wipe the files from it. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Kinda curious now as to where your getting it from as you dont just go and get it, you have to be invited/nominated to get it at present as its still a closed beta test?

be very careful if your not getting it from non-microsoft source, but if you are getting it off the MS servers then let me know how you find the novel downloader?

  9. Actually i was about to post on how to get the beta. How do i get that?

Its not easy to get on betas for the likes of OS or office apps but sign up here https://beta.microsoft.com or hope that someone you know whos a beta tester gets invites.

  11. Ok thanks. I may be able to get it from another site too. To be certain it has nothing in it i can also run a virus scan on it. Thanks for the help though.

  12. Halo, i am googled out looking for a third party download of the file. So i emailed my uncle who i am pretty sure had the winxp beta when that came out. So if he has an account or some way of getting it i will wait on his word. I will let you know what is going on.

    Reasons to be weary of 3rd party downloads of Vista Beta2;

    1. Its illegal
    2. Its a 2.7gb DL but do wyou know what your going to get version wise after this large DL? easy to rename a file!
    3. It maybe Vista it maybe not
    4. Could be full of malware
    5. Say its the actual Beta.. is the licence key legit and working as Vista does need internet access a fair bit, one area is getting drivers, while Beta2 Feb CTP is pretty good on installing most drivers, it cannot know them all.

Even if your uncle has a Beta/Connect account, you still dont get all the trials to choose from, but I hope if you can get it in a legitimate way, you'll enjoy it... a new learning curve to it.

  14. Well i have decided to let it go and just get the final release when it comes out. As the msdn sites are taking me in circles. Sorry for bothering you and thanks for the help anyway as this may register to abby as a "pointless post". Sorry about that that i may have done somthing again.
