how would i partition my hdd to have the os in one partiton and all the other software in an other partition (i.e music, photos, programs, etc.)?

i tired just installing the os in one partition (i have vista ultimate by the way), and the software in the other, but some software like microsoft office and windows messenger when installing they just go to the os partition, with out giving me an option to install in the other partition. i don't know if that makes sence, any help is greatly apriciated.

and also what is the difference between a basic disk and a dynamic disk?

    Hi

So you already have 2 partitions? if you do then some applications and MS Office is one of them choose when installing Custom install as that will allow you to choose the location to install. Sadly some programs do not allow this and will only install to the C: root OS drive.

Pictures and other basic storage locations you can store where you like, if you wish to move some defaul Vista folders like Pictures the then go into your User account folder right click on the folder in question say Pictures and choose from the TABS > Location and then click Move browse for the other partition and choose that as default.

As for Basic vs Dynamic, this saves me typing a reply out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314343

well i think that works for me on the partitions, but i still don't understand the basic and dynamic disks. i was reading that earlier, but i don't want to get into the technical stuff, i'm just wondering what are the common uses? just like a really basic explanation. and thank you for your help, this site its always been very helpful.

    Hi

Basic is just normal HD and the space is allocated as such to one HD and can be in multiple partitions.

Dynamic disk, is a software form of RAID in which two or more ( upto 32 seperate HDs ) HDs can have their space spanned across the two drives to make them look as one.

Dynamic disks are also other forms of RAID as in Mirror or Stripe ( mirror allows same data to be stored on both HDs, good for data security... stripe is where the data is split between both drives to speed the data transfers up ) caveat to this is software RAID is not as good as hardware RAID, so personally wouldnt in your likely PC usage go this route, stick with Basic.
