I just reinstalled Windows on our Win XP Pro (Inc SP 2 pack) computer.Wow,what a chore that was (is) on a slow Dialup connection! But for now I'm asking for help on just one problem.
I have 120 GB HD on this computer,I decided to partition as follows:C:\ 20 GB
    D:\ 100GB (It's actually less than that)
The problem I'm having is,that (for instance) if I Download a free Program from the Internet it parks itself in the C:\ Partition, as a Program Folder! I thought this kind of stuff, would automatically go in the D:\ Partition ! What did I do wrong ? and can someone help? Thanks.

What program are you using to download files?

Internet Explorer, Firefox or a specific download manager?

You should find that in any one of these you can change the default location of downloads in the settings.

Thanks for your quick response Orbital 57,
I'm with Internet Explorer, but more specifically,I do most of my Downloads with Download Express or Star Downloader.
(Quote)You should find that in any one of these you can change the default location of downloads in the settings.
I tried your suggestion,as above,on Star Downloader,no luck there! You know,I used ''Download a Free Program''as an example, but it should just about be everything, except Windows stuff going in C:\ Local Drive? What else can I try? Thanks again.

Can anyone else help with my original ploblem? Things are getting more screwed up day by day !For instance Avast shows me a red windows message error, each time I go on the Interner. This must be because I took Avast out of C:\ Local drive, shown in a Programs file there,so I figured (Maybe wrongly) that it should have gone into my main partition, where everything but Windows stuff should go! I need detailed information,on how to fix this,if someone can help?Thank you.

I'm afriad that I'm not familiar with either of your download managers (or Avast although a lot of people here do). I use Free Download Manager (available through a link on the IE7 plug in page), I know I've done it in that so if you're willing to experiment then you could try FDM.

Otherwise I'm afraid that I'm out of idea's (and at work have pretty heavily restriced access to a lot of things so I can't experiment).

    Anyone else have ideas?

It sounds like you cut & pasted the Avast folder from C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\
    directly into D:\

It has to be installed, you cannot just move it around
if this is this the case, you will need to reinstal it correctly

Not too sure of your reasoning ?
I have an 80Gb hard drive
    partioned into
C:\ 15GB - windows and general programs - it still has 8GB free
    D:\ 65GB - Games & Data

so, if you think you may run out of space on your c:\ partition it is unlikely to be a problem.
If you have another reason to only have windows on the c:\ partition, please post back so we can have a better understanding of what you are trying to achieve.

Like 'Orbital57' I am not familiar with Download Express or Star Downloader
    I use flashget
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/FlashGet_d461.html

When I download with flashget, it gives me the option of where I wish to download the file to.
Generally with programs i just download them to the desktop.
When It comes time to instal them, the vast majority of programs will give you the option of where you wish to instal.
These days I just leave them set at their default, which is generally
    C:\Program files\
If I downloaded a program that was around a GB in size then I would probably instal it into D:\

    (qUOTE)my documents
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310147
I checked the above and,If I understand correctly, when I move the ''My Documents'' folder to my new D:\ Partition, then whenever I send anything there,it will automatically register there normally w/o any other actions(Clicking) on my part? If that's the case Sir! That's exactly what I was looking for.Thank you so much.

    sounds like it should work

I dont use my documents - dare to be different :D

    I use folders like
    d:\p for pictures
    d:\v for videos

that sort of thing, but I just put files there manually
so if the my documents move works, it will be more efficient

Isn't it possible to use "Explore" to transfer errant programs/data from C: to D: ?

R -click "start", L-click "Explore", open whatever you want moved to the main pane, drag and drop to D: in the index (create a new folder/ rename in D: as needed).

Moving files between partitions is as easy as
    drag and drop
    cut and paste
    etc

Yah,I'd like to give My Pictures and My Videos the same treatment as My Documents to go into my D:\ Partition. In C:\ Local Disk, the only thing I'd like to see there,is the Windows OS Files or whatever else needs to be there!Otherwise what's the use of having 2 Partitions! Thanks.

I assumed the sub folders of my documents would have been created automatically with the change
    ie: my photos etc

If they did not, follow the second link I posted earlier

    registry
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

you should be able to do it manually through the registry

You assume correctly, they are created automatically.I was just thinking to have both of them separated from being a subfolder of My Documents! No big deal,I can live with this,if it can't be done.
I had gone to the Link you posted earlier, and I just went back now and, most of the lines are yellow and,you can't read the darn things! How can one fix this? As a matter of fact.I've seen this same thing on other sites and it's a real pain! Thanks.

Try deleting your temporary internet files

    just plucking at straws

the only text settings I can find in IE (besides size)
Tools - internet options - fonts
    no colour option

    and

    Tools - internet options - accessibility - colour,style,size
which you could try, but they will most likely give you more viewing problems on some web sites

the text isnt yellow on my browser, so it isnt the page itself

I will try some of your suggestions just to see what will happen! You mean that, if you go back a second time to ''http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756''you don't get a bunch of almost
unreadable yellow lines? Very curious indeed! I hope I can fix this somehow.
