    Go into professional.
    Click start,RIGHT CLICK My Computer,
    Click Manage
Click disk management, RIGHT click on C: partition
Click properties, error checking- check now button, if it has a box to click for repair, click it to tick it.

You really need an XP Home disk same as your preinstalled to do the repair, but see how it goes.

All may not be lost, if you had a preinstalled version, and you let us know--
The brand name of the computer
The service tag (if there is one, on the rear of the computer)
As much information as you can - sometimes its held in a hidden partition on your hard drive, and may be retrievable, with the correct information, or, from the manufacturer.

It's quite possible that you can install Windows OK using your friend's CD and your own Windows key from the label on your pc.

This will work if the version is the same (home /pro etc) and the OEM sufficiently similar.
