    Partitioning harddrive probs

    Hey guys ,

Was wondering if anyone can help me with the ^^above^^

Am using GParted and after picking what size partition I wish to make it runs a simulation all good and then a disk check and says it has errors and can't continue!!
Also have run CHSDK and all good..

    Have tried PartitionMagic too!!

Running XP PRO at the present and running good so don't see how it's full of errors.:confused

Well, the log file shows that it was not able to shrink the filesystem, it couldn't access it entirely or accessed it but was not able to properly re-calc due to an obvious issue with the filesystem itself.

Is there any kind of encyption on any of the folders?
Is there a HardDrive encryption software such as PCGuardian or PointSec installed on this machine (commonly seen on work PCs)?

When you are scheduling a ScanDisk, make sure to check both options so it does a complete check, it will take a bit of time but definitely needed in this type of a project.

If that checks out fine, I would consider a registry cleanup though not sure if GParted would actually be effected by it.
    That is all for now.

Hello and thanks 4 the reply;)

Ok lets see, No encryption on folders or harddrive
I will check the options setting on Scandisk
also have tried a registry cleanup before posting and I think with your comments about encryption has gave me an Idea, How about this I run Norton System Works with a utility called Go Back and that would leave something on the harddrive so it could be returned to a former state..:major

    What do you think??

I ran CHKDSK b4 as there is No Scandisk in XP..

Have Norton system works check for errors, I used it quite often over the years.
One thing to remember, instal system works on the hard drive, in case you want to undo any error checking, otherwise its final.

In addition to what Bak said,
Having a utility like GoBack may interfer with the partition re-sizing, though i am not certain, I have seen utilities of this level and design to cause issues with process that otherwise would run with no problems.

Since you have this re-sizing issue with more than 1 partition sizing utility, it is very likely the culprit is a DISK/SYSTEM based program that is installed on the system.

Also, I prefer disabling/turning-off System Restore, AV type scanners and even screensaver before running disk utilities such as Disk Defragmentation.
So that might be something you might want to try but as usual, if you have an critical data you do not want to lose, I suggest you do a backup.

Note: If you right-click on a partition and click Properties, under Tools tab you will see Error-checking, this is the same as Scandisk aka CheckDisk.
Make sure you check both of those options then click OK and then YES.

To see Turcoloco,s tab, in case you are not familiar with it,
Right click My Computer, click manage, click disk management , then right click on the Drive to be checked, and choose properties, then tools, then click the error checking check now button.
Turning off all the things as Turcoloco says can help make life much easier.

I have a small scandisk/defrag script that I created for this process but I will give you the easy to apply command line version that anyone can do which is also quicker than the conventional GUI approach too:

at the Command-Line window prompt, press y for yes and then press [ENTER].

Note: Instead of the underscore leave a single space.

You are done! On next boot, it will run the Checkdisk in 'repair mode on C partition since boot partition resides on C by default.

If you have partitions other than C, then Checkdisk could run without requiring a reboot. ;)

    Solved

The problem was Go Back, I turned it off and then tried GParted again and hey presto it worked and stuffed up XP Pro.
To cut a long story short a full re-install followed and no more partitioning on the same H/drive again, I will get a bigger 2nd H/drive and put Linux on that.

Thanks for the ideas and help...Mark..;)

I had a good feeling it was the culprit and you seemed to have confirmed this.

I'm glad you resolved it! :)
