Ok, I had an ubuntu live cd, using the gnome partition program in ubuntu I tried to resize my windows partition, and then create a new one for ubuntu . .
But . . . it didn't go very well, I now have a partition that has an unknown file system and is linux native or something. Is there any way I can recover that windows partition?

using gparted you will have to reformat that partition as ntfs or fat32 if you want windows to read it. Won't be able to run linux off that partition though

so is your whole drive formated to linux? If your still running off the ubuntu live cd then it will probably not read the hard drive as live cd doesn't mount the hard drive by default. If you running in windows then windows will not read a Linux partition (format is probably ETC2) full stop.

I'm not sure, I had originally tried to create the linux partition in the free space created by resizing the windows partition, but I'm not sure what thing went wrong first.

I'm not at that computer right now, but I've been working off the ubuntu live cd. Right now I'm on windows.

Hard to say what the problem is could be a few things if the comp won't boot to windows you may have corrupted the windows MBR(Master Boot Record) or yeah you may have wiped windows, it sounds as if you haven't installed ubuntu to hard drive yet but if you have it may be a problem with grub(which is the ubuntu multi boot bootloader)

Sorry, I thought I mentioned, I never actually installed Ubuntu, just edited the partitions.

so does windows still boot? If not do you get any errors ie-Invalid partition table, Error loading operating system or Missing operating system?

what type of computer is it? If you have a windows cd or recovery cd I would try Fixmbr in the recovery console. Might be an idea to wait for one of the folks on this site that knows a lot more about windows than me to give you some advice.

OK, we weren't given a disk with our computer for some reason, and never really got around to complaining.

That would have to be a Dell wouldn't it? No matter whatever it is I would phone them and ask for a Windows OS disc or at LEAST a recovery cd. full os would be better.

You would be absolutely correct. :D

I really should have got the disk a long time ago, at least as a precautionary measure.

Yeah the no cd was a hint:) also the Bad PBR error seems to be a bit of a Dell favorite as well. Not saying it doesn't happen on other comps but a lot of people that get this problem seem to have one thing in common DELL. You need to get that disc. Apparently they will send you one without to much hassle. Good luck:)

Well, I got it fixed eventually, I used the recovery console on the windows disk, and used fixmbr, fixboot and bootcfg /r (I think), I then used acronis disk director to convert the partition to an ntfs one, and now everything looks exactly like it was before all this happened, so I'm happy. :)
