Hello, I am new to mgeeks, I was wondering if someone could help me figure out how to partition my single hd, without losing os and other data in order to move page filing to specific location for performance? My system is a bit low on RAM and often uses virtual memory. I was reading a MS site that said that this would greatly improve my comp performance.

    Thanks for any help

Well I have tried this a couple of times and I would say that there was only a modest improvement.

Furthermore, in order to get any kind of benefit from moving the page/swap file onto its own partition, it would be best to have 2 HDD and to move the swapfile onto the 2nd HDD.

In your shoes, I would invest in more ram as this will be (in theory & hopefully practise) a lot easier to perform and will yield very much more meaningful results.

    Good Luck

Hello, again....first thank you for your response. I am undecided on whether messin around with this is actually advantangous. However, the one thing that I seen that keeps me thinking about it, is that there (ms) article stated that no matter how much RAM u have, the os xp still uses virtual memmory. The system I have is by no stretch of the imagination great but I had hoped it would be quicker than it is? I have gone through many registry cleaning tools, used hijack this, good spyware programs and it still seems slow, and when my son plays his Generals game it freezes on him. I do believe that adding more RAM would improve my performance greatly, figured I would just keep trying to get the most out of it....

    Thanks Damack

Go down the route that moves the swap file by all means. My advice is that if you do, then do so by placing it in a partition on a 2nd hdd.

Once you have ascertained that the above move was pretty much a total and complete waste of time, then get some more ram.

Lock ups associated with game play generally fall in the category of problemtic psu, overheating cpu / graphics card or system, faulty or problematic ram and of course some other type of software error (generally poor graphics card driver).

An easy way to find out if the game lock ups are heat issue related is to take the side of the pc cover off (and preferably have a fan blowing onto the pc hw).

Proper ram management is also important, by that I mean how many progs do you have running at boot ie how many icons do you have in the system tray by the clock (each one of these is removing from the total available and slowing up your pc).

When playing games best to shut down all peripheral progs and free up as much ram as possible.

    Good Luck
