Since Nov 1 or 2nd, I haven't been able to get to the forums here (doing this from home) from my work (has a navy dot mil domain). Has anything occurred on this end that may have affected the attempts to come here? The error I get is "Firewall: Failure to connect" along with the IP of the forums and a message to contact the administrator of the remote site. Emails to Tim and Jim here have bounced back (timeout error). Any answer please email me at ken dot morrisjk at gmail dot com.

    Thanks :)

You may want to check out the .mil side of the world. I use to be there. The military can be quite strict on some domains.

Yeah, and if you are able, you may need to slacken off the firewal settings a tad, Ken. If it's from the .mil side you're 'prolly out of luck, since they are unlikely to appreciate you playing with their secrity settings.

What a perfectly deliciously phrased understatement. :)

It could be related to the ads that run at the top of the pages. I could not get on from work and disabled the lame spyware block they had 1/2 set up.

Ken can you check at work if they have installed any new security systems that would account for this?

I have aimed this at the Admins for you, since you cannot email them direct, BUT doubt its anything that they can do from this side.

I have asked about it at work but haven't received a reply. Just waiting for now... Thanks for all your answers :)

Finally got an answer. Any IP address with the first two sets of numbers of the IP address XX.XX.000.00 are being blocked temporarily until Feb 2006. Those two sets of numbers are the same numbers of this forum's IP. so until then, or I can get here when I'm home, see you in March next year - Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Happy MLK, Presidents's Day, Valentines, and Ground Hog Day. :) :D

I don't know why cause the deny ip list still has the IP numbers I mentioned earlier unless I missed something - not familiar with the whole thing anyway.. We'll see how long this lasts.

I've had the same problem (same .navy.mil). Wish I'd have seen this thread sooner. I'll have to give it a try tomorrow. Thanks for doing the leg work.

I'm curious as the reason for the ip range block, given they had an end date listed you said?

Who can say, around Oct/Nov we had some major issues. Some of which forced Password changes to all individual accounts and web based services. I really surprised Ken3 got a straight answer from NMCI or EDS (our network admin is now contracted out to them).

Maybe they decided to block particular ips instead of ip ranges? Thats the best explaination I can come up with.

Ahhh, someone else who has assimilated into the NMCI network ;) :). I actually got the answer from someone at the base I work at who is a contractor support to the local admins. I forwarded that to NMCI and they replied practically with the same answer.

OBTW I'm at home posting this particular reply.

Sweet i was right? I guessed that because most admins take a great amount of abuse to block ranges, its better to bllock only the ips that are bugging you, basiculy its what I would of done in the same situation. Glad to have you back though.

Thanks, Colemanguy :) Since we're dealing with a military network, any site that is in a blocked IP range that is job/mission essential/important/critical can be waived (I assume put into some sort of an exception list). Though this site doesn't fall into it, I have explained to the folks that MajorGeeks forum is a good source of information of solving computer problems and anti-spyware/malware. Maybe a seed was planted and someone looked further into it and let it go. I didn't do anything further.

Here's an extract on why the IP range was blocked...."THE FOLLOWING INTERNET PROTOCOL (IP) ADDRESSES HAVE RECENTLY BEEN REPORTED
PROBING AND/OR ATTEMPTING ILLICIT ACCESS TO NAVY COMPUTER SYSTEMS." The deny string contained "ip access-list 150 deny ip xx.xx.0.0 0.0.255.255 any log". If this forum was doing this probe/illicit access (which I don't think it would), that would cause it to be blocked. I did notice that the MG Games site (demonews.com) has the same IP address as this forum but I get the "failed to connect error", but again, I have no idea if Demonews is performing such action. Are the first two sets of numbers of the IP address common for game related sites? Just wonderin' ....

Wow Ken! It's so great to see you here again!:) You have been greatly missed. Hope all has been well with you, your lovely lady and your son?

To try and answer about the IP. There are countless IP's that begin with the same two numbers and they are not necessarily attributed to game sites. The IP is assigned by the web host just as your IP is assigned by your ISP at home. Usually when an IP is blocked it is done so by an individual IP if it's static 12.34.567.00 or a certain block of it's not a static IP (example) 12.34.567.00 - 12.34.567.99. I can only imagine the literally thousands of sites that must have been blocked having just the first two digits blocked...maybe even an entire web host...of course I'm just speculating now..:D

    State of affairs .... ;-)

Things are going good We're building a home in Tappahannock, VA (living in Fredericksburg). No job change just a move from a very crowded area to a more peaceful, less stressful area. We're in the stages of getting our home ready - painting, scrub house down - keeping it clean. Open house will be at the end of this month. New house should be ready around the end of May.

This past Wednesday, I was in a recording studio doing the keyboard for a song the worship leader at my church wrote (http://stevekropp.com/news). He's producing another CD, so I'll be on the CD for one song. That's an experience (my first) in the studio - 3-4 takes on the whole song and a couple on a tag line. Talking about staying on the beat, I was consistently getting slightly ahead towards the end of the song, but I finally got it. The guy at the studio can do some tweaks where need to since he has enough to work with. There'll be other instruments on the song as well which need to be recorded. Can't wait to see how it all turns out.
