password protected files on network?

is there a way to setup a folder to be accessed by onlypeople on the network who know the password?

i have a file that is shared by the network.. so does that mean everyone can access it? i hope not...

 

Yes, you can do it.

If you want instructions you'll have to indicate the OS as it's very diffrent from XP to 9x.

9x allows you to simply set a password on any share when you make it. Where as with XP you don't set a password directly but rather assign groups or individual users rights to the share. It's also a little diffrent if you use windows XP home or pro, because with pro you'll have to watch the ntfs settings as well where as with home it will just automaticly match the ntfs settings to the share settings.

If that's the case just make an account with the same name on all 3 computers. Then on 98 set a password so that it's the same as the password that account uses. Then on 2k and XP give that user account permissions to the shares you want. Make sure you keep the password the same and then you're done.

On XP and 2k just make sure to set the ntfs permissions as well as the share permissions, you can see both by right clicking on the folder to share and selecting properties. If you can't see all the tabs in XP then you have to go to tools>folder options and on the second tab turn simple file sharing off. Although simple file sharing may take care of it for you. I haven't used it in a long time.
