Path resolving is damaged!

Hi!

Please take a look at this and download the image to understand.
Whenever I try to double click an Excel 2003 document, Excel starts, but I have a message telling me that EXCEL.EXE could not be found.

Now if you look at the path, you'll find that it's not full.

Anyway, if you close the dialog and wait for some time (2 or 3 minutes), the file opens.

I'm opening the file through the network. On a local computer, this doesn't happen.

 

First thing I would check is that the %PROGRAMFILES% environment variable is set correctly.

1. Hit windows key + r (or click Start --> Run)
2. In the 'Run' dialog, type 'cmd' (without the quotes)
3. Press enter (or click 'OK')
4. At the command prompt, type 'echo %PROGRAMFILES%' (without the quotes)
5. Press enter

The output of this should correspond to your program files directory, which for most people, is c:\program files

 

Wow! I always take the long hard way instead of first-things-to-do way. (I did a system restore)

Anyway, thank you very much. I wish I've seen your reply earlier because I really wanted to know what was wrong.

The problem is now happening on the computer that has the excel files. (local)

What do you think? Is it a virus?
I have NOD32 updated and it gave a warning yesterday but I cleaned the infection.
