ive looked at a couple other posts that have some of the same issue but i still have a few questions. as the title says my comp i can turn it on but it will either shut itself right back down,or it will run for a minute then shut down . i just got this computer 39 hrs ago and have had it plugged in the entire time except for when i was checking the hard drive connections and the memory stick connections, yet the battery isnt even warm. so basically im just asking anyone to help me narrow things down so i can either start replacing the PSU,power cord, motherboard ect.or i can take the paperweight and toss it in the river. I now know what charlie brown felt like with the football ,f i didnt keep my head shaved id pull it out. please someone guide me through this

I can't find the info because I think this is a 2007 laptop.
There were models that had heat problems and as a result of a class action suit, I believe HP replaced parts in quite a few models.

Overheating could have burned out the cpu.

Some notebooks don't work well with a dead/flat battery.
Remove the battery, use the power cord only and see if the symptoms change.

One other thing, reset the RAM. Bad RAM or even mis-seated RAM can cause strange computer behavior.

    Hello and welcome to MajorGeeks!

Let's see if we can get a bit more info:
First off, are there any error messages? Does the laptop (occasionally) get into Windows? Does the laptop beep at you at all?

I had an Acer laptop that did this. I cleaned out the fan and it's housing and that did the trick. The previous owner was a smoker so it was gummed up well, the fan spun, and sounded fine but it was so clogged that the fan couldn't do it's job. To checked for a clogged fan, because I can't always see inside to see the blockage, I place laptops on top of a high speed house fan and boot it up, if it boots and runs programs while sitting on the house fan, then I know the fan ports are clogged.

A way longer shot is that it could be the graphics processor.

I also had a (few) old HP laptops that started out doing this and then the display wouldn't turn on at all after sometime. It turned out to be the NViDIA GPU. It was basically a throw away, and since it was garbage I took it apart, removed the graphics card unit and baked it in my kitchen oven to reseat/solder the GPU back to the board.

It worked like a charm, but I would never do something like that unless I was willing to throw the machine away; complete last resort. It's not the proper way of reballing a GPU, but for people who lack the solder skills and tools, it usually works. But sometimes the problem will rear it's ugly head again. My track record for this procedure is 5 for 5, with only one reverting back to the blank screen.0

i might have found part of my problem, idk what do you think ,this comp requires a 65 wett charger and the guy i got it from sent one that is only 30 so its not even getting enough juice to do anything .i dont know alot about computers but with general electrician work low power supply is just as bad if not worse then too much. oh i have it sitting on a cooling board already

its beeped once it was two beeps .i get no error messages and it has made it into windows a couple times . i just put this in another reply but when i got the comp the guy sent a 30 watt charger instead of a 65 watt which it requires so that might be part of my problem
