How do you feel about it?

I had a copy of paint shop pro.... I got from somebody. I then I went and bought it at Best Buy. It worked much better.

    What are ya'lls thoughts....

proper versions (one's that you buy yourself!!!) are generally better than one's that are copied or hacked versions, don't know why, maybe some files don't get copied or become corrupt when you copy software.
i've compared 2 copies of the new sims game, copied and one i purchased, and the purchased one performed better, but i don't know why this was!

Pirated software gets thrown around the place, sports crack attempts that didn't work, bugs in the installation, etc. If it is simply a serial number thats been released, its probably not going to effect the overall performance of the program. However, some games companies put in deliberate degrading of software once they've detected a dodgey key. The program crashes for no apparent reason, you can only play the first couple of levels, it starts speaking spanish for no apparent reason....

My friend had a pirated version of Photoshop CS. Right-click didnt work, and neither did ANY keyboard shortcuts, making it totally useless to a seasoned PS user.

I hate cracked software. As a general rule I only use stuff that has a keygen or regfile or serial. (But 95+% of the time I purchase stuff anyway, because of my conscience, since I am no longer that young and poor -my two best excuses)

    Still stealing.

There are lots of excuses out there, some better than others.

You must be careful if you decide that it's ok to steal software....many times those cracks can have backdoors built into them. :p

The way i think about things is that if it works and its free ill use it.

Come to think of it i dont think i have bought a bit of software in my life apart from the original Half-life. turned out to be a good buy! then i found out that its available pretty much everywhere on the net, but anyway!

    Well thats my views.

if it's not free and you didn't pay for it, shame on you.

I'm not saying that I haven't done that before. I think most of us have at some point. But after having something that you worked long and hard on ripped from you, you're concept of this changes quite a bit. All the software I use is legit and properly paid for. I either deleted the software that I had or purchased it as a result of my being ripped off. The software I couldn't afford, I deleted.

I use demo's now when I can and have to.

Don't steal .. if you want it, buy it. You're driving prices up and making it more difficult for programmers to make a living.

My conscience gets to me too......

Now I must say I use the freeware offered here. I don' t consider that stealing, because that is how the creator offered it.

However, PSP or games etc........ I feel like that is stealing.... I have had several things that were "given" to me and I feel bad.... I have taken them off of my computer.....

The people who offer freeware, do they create it for fun or to help people out ... If you have created software or freeware what was your intentions..... I hope it was to help a computer spaz like myself.......
    ;)

Because, I very much appreciate all of the really cool software, I have found here.......

I say that if you own an original copy of what ever software it might be or a game, you are entitle to make backups.... As for people who still, everyone still in there young age but if the software is good enough I know people would save some money and buy it.

Now if only computer parts were stealable like software? Well that is a different story...

If it's free, take it. If they take donations, send a little their way. If it's not free, pay for it, or find a freeware app that does the job. It's their hard work, if they want ot give it away, that is their call, but if they want to be paid, then pony up the cash. If it's not worth paying for, do without it. That is the only thing which separates us from the thugs and criminals of the world.

All I can say is that it feels good to pay for USEFULL software -especially when it's written by some 'joe' who has written it because he/she wants a tool that isn't available in the 'major' commercial market. -But even when it comes to software that is written by giants (like MS) they put time and money into it so I (personally) pay for it if I want it.
It always puts a smile on my face when I pay for software that is cheap and effective -I can rest assured that it will only promote innovation.
I'm not perfect, and very few people on the net have NEVER tried cracks -but I like paying for what I use. The choice is yours though: cracks are available -and probably always will be -but it feels good to support usefull software.
    Yours,

One thing I really despise is cracking or using dodgy serials for shareware/demos.

What that will eventually do is stop people offering demos or developing their product.

If the software author is good enough to offer a demo and you like it, pay for it.

Anyway, there really isn't any need to these days.

There are plenty of excellent freeware programs available that are as good or better than commercial ones.

I for once would use a cracked software program to mess around with it and see if wether I like it or if is usefull for me. And if is not why buy it. Most expensive software suck...So why not try the full version for free eventhough it's an illegal copy and then buy it if is worth buying.

    Good point, except:

    That is still illegal :)

Hi, Software can be tricky. I am running XP Home which I purchased when buying a new computer after using a "free" XP pro.

I found a freeware program that could make an image of my computer much like the pro ones do but it needed a second XP sytem to support it. I did everything legal and asked Microsoft what I had to do to put a 2nd. copy of XP on my cmoputer and activate it. I was told it was not allowed and tht I was allowed only one copy of the XP os program on my computer. I thought that was pretty tough seeing that I had paid for the software anyway and it was going on the same computer.

Do you think I should have bought another copy so as to satisfy Microsoft? I had to finds another wayto image my system.

    Well...

It was an unactivated copy of XP you wanted to put onto this computer that already had XP on it?

We Microsoft techs truthfully don't have a problem with that, unless its going onto the same partition.

Then, as company policy, we decline doing it, unless we are backing up data and formatting the drive afterwards. But if its two drives, or two partitions, no problem.

I recently got rid of all my illegal software. I just felt like running a clean machine. There's a lot I could say for and against illegal software but I won't.

For me, illegal software has lost it's appeal.

It just feels better running a machine that's totally legit.

Hi, I am not really technical. I did have 2 drives on the one computer. I needed to put the extra copy of the 2 nd. drive and that copy was the one that imaged the normal drive that I was using and if in trouble I could bring up the second copy and restore my normal drive. I can't remember the name of the image program but it is fairly weel known for doing it's job and it was free.

I contacted Microsoft Australia and although 2 or 3 people conferred about it I was told it was illegal and I could not do it. I never took it any further, one reason is that I am not very good with telephone conversation even with my own family as I am 74 and deaf. By deaf, I can hear but can't translate words especially if the person has an accent.

I am not sure why people use warez. I go to many forums, some of which are warez. I get the impression that many of the posters collect programs and songs like stamp collecting. I have seen boasting about how many of each they have and I can't concieve them using every one. As far as songs go some have thousands and I doubt whether they are ever played. In this type of warez persons the legal owners do not miss out as the people have no need or intention of using it. I hope I make a little sense. I am not condoning it. As I said they collect things because they are there to collect. Some have gigabytes of songs and it would take all their spare moments to play them.
