I downloaded a security testing program called "PC Audit" from Major Geeks. It tests the effectivenes of your security much more throughly than any other I've seen. I was very impressed-- until it screwed up my pc.

After "simulating" a hacker attack on your PC, it reports on how successful it was. If it succeeded in hacking your security, it sends you a report displaying the text that you typed during the simulation, along with a screen-shot of what was on your PC while you were typing. ...Very disturbing stuff.

I had it send the report on the test to my e-mail address. I was very disturbed to see how vulnerable I was, even with a good, well-configured firewall. However, after re-configuring my firewall, I saw some disturbing messages appearing. After checking them out, it appears that this "demonstration" program is still residing in my system, sending information from my PC back to the author of the program every time I check for mail!

Has anyone had any experience with this problem?

    Are these people legit?

Well, this doesn't seem to interest anyone much. I'm spoken with Internet Security Alliance, and was not impressed with their answer (which was basically "buy a security program like ours and you can get rid of the problem.")

I tried to give them a bad rating on the download page, but because of the confusing way that the voting was set up, accidentally rated them a "5" instead of a "0", as I intended.

Anyway, for those who care, I'd stay away from these folks.

    Hi,
This is the first I have heard from it and Halo tells me it is listed as spyware by a couple apps. It tested fine when I tested it, but to be safe I am removing it immediately. A tool like this will undoubtedly show up as a virus at least because of its main functions, but I will err on the side of caution out of respect for our readers. Sorry for any hassles.

Thanks! I've scrubbed my system pretty hard. If anything is still there, it's in a root kit. (I'm checking that out, too.) I was expecting virus indications, but not the suspicious activities after the demonstration was supposedly ended.

It was an impressive demonstration-- opened my eyes to some vulnerabilities I didn't know I had. At least I got some not-too-painful education from it.
